DESCRIPTION
The Tax Law Center at the NYU School of Law is seeking a full-time Attorney Advisor OR Senior Attorney Advisor, based on experience, with expertise in litigation or tax controversy. This role will report to the Director of Litigation work closely with the Director of Litigation and other senior staff members to contribute to rigorous, high-impact tax legal work in the public interest.
You are an attorney with some experience in litigation, especially related to administrative law, or tax controversy, or in working in US federal government processes of crafting, interpreting, administering, or adjudicating tax issues. You are excited to work closely with academics, legal practitioners, and policymakers to advance racial and economic equity in taxation.
You are an excellent writer of legal briefs, and of other products including memos, and comments on regulations and legislation. You are excited to dive into technical tax issues.
You are a highly organized project manager and a clear communicator, able to manage production of high-quality, timely written work, and exercise judgement about where to focus time and resources to have robust input in fast-moving tax law and policy processes.
Experience in both litigation and tax is highly desired, however we will consider applicants with strong litigation experience especially in administrative law but without deep experience in tax subject matter.
REQUIREMENTS
- JD or equivalent and current admission to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, the highest court of a state, another United States court of appeals, or a United States district court (or willingness and ability to gain or regain such admission prior your start date).
- Some US experience practicing or working on issues involving administrative or constitutional law, including some litigation or controversy experience. Some experience with federal appellate litigation is highly desired but not required.
- Experience in tax subject matter is highly desired but not required, but applicants without tax experience must have strong litigation experience and must be able to demonstrate interest and aptitude for understanding tax technical subject matter in a controversy context.
- Strong legal research and writing skills, including the ability to express precise, highly technical information in a way that is clear and compelling.
- Excellent communication skills.
- A commitment to the mission of the Center.
- For Senior Attorney Advisors, good judgment about how to navigate and weigh complex and uncertain legal, policy, and strategic considerations.

Prior experience managing staff is a plus but is not required, but you need to be excited to develop these skills.
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for an Attorney Advisor position is between $150,000 and $190,000 per year depending on experience. The annual base salary range for a Senior Attorney Advisor position is between $175,000 and $205,000 per year depending on experience.

Responsibilities:
The Attorney Advisor, who will report to the Director of Litigation or another senior member of staff, will be responsible for duties including:
- In consultation with the Director of Litigation, helping to shape an ongoing litigation/controversy work agenda, including maintaining an overview of strategic opportunities and threats to the integrity of the tax system.
- Conducting legal research and authoring a variety of written products called for in that agenda, including amicus briefs as well as reports, memos, and explainers on issues at the intersection of tax and administrative and constitutional law.
- Collaborating with other Tax Law Center staff on projects that implicate administrative and/or constitutional law issues, such as comments on rulemaking.
- Maintaining current knowledge of relevant administrative and constitutional law issues in tax through research and participation in conferences and other events.
- In consultation with the Director of Litigation, assisting in the implementation of a system to identify, flag, track, and prioritize opportunities for the Center to further its mission in these areas, as well as in the production of written products.
- Supervising research assistants and/or fellows in tasks related to the above responsibilities, such as discrete research projects, legal writing, and tracking litigation priorities.
- In consultation with the Director of Litigation, helping build strong, confidential relationships with high-level practitioners, academics, and other outside experts, and managing their input in shaping this work.
In addition to the responsibilities listed for the Attorney Advisor above, Senior Attorney Advisors will be responsible for:
- Helping the Director of Litigation to set the agenda in the area of litigation and tax controversy for the Tax Law Center.
- Providing strategic guidance to the Director of Litigation and other senior team members.
- Supervising and mentoring Tax Law Center staff.
