Description:
TLU BEHAVIORAL HEALTH NAVIGATOR (BHN)
Therapeutic Community Overview: Therapeutic Living Units (TLU) are Therapeutic Communities embedded in correctional settings. This model provides a unique opportunity for inmates (referred to as members) to proactively engage in evidence-based care for substance use disorders. The ‘agent’ of change in the TLU is the whole community. The role of the BHN is to support the “community as method” process. Staff involve themselves in activities such as recreation, meal preparation, dining, and chores, on an equal footing with TLU members, as a means of emphasizing their membership in the community and their participation as role models.
All staff are expected to meaningfully and actively participate in all aspects of the community, ensuring a safe environment and positive functioning of the collective community. Staff co-create a healthy environment by interacting with members and inviting connection through sharing personal experience, whilst maintaining professional boundaries, referred to as ‘Rational Authority’ in Therapeutic Community language. Staff are supported to lead with humility, reduce any power imbalance and where possible, support member empowerment. This approach, and providing objective facilitation distinguishes the community as the major change factor for TLU members.
Job Description: In a residential treatment environment, the TLU Behavioral Health Navigator (BHN) works with members who have acute and/or chronic addiction issues and comorbid mental health challenges. The primary role of the TLU BHN is to mentor and engage members in groups to address substance misuse and mental health challenges. The BHN is responsible for providing direct support services for residents at the Transitional Living Unit (TLU) sites in Calgary, Fort Saskatchewan, Lethbridge and Red Deer. This role ensures that members receive the necessary guidance and support to facilitate their recovery and rehabilitation, while adhering to organizational policies and regulatory requirements. The BHN requires skills to assist members individually and in groups, to facilitate groups and to assist with crisis intervention and containment skills. They require the ability to understand the dynamics of offending behavior and to assess this population’s needs and risks. This is an immersive and intensive treatment environment; thus, excellent time management and organizational skills are essential.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred) or a similar level of experience as approved by the Program and Executive Directors.
