POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking a building maintenance worker to join our team, working collaboratively to enhance the overall maintenance of our buildings.
The Building Maintenance Worker provides will support the Public Works Maintenance Supervisor to repair buildings and facilities; and install and repair various electronic and mechanical equipment. This position is responsible for the effective and safe use of available materials and equipment. The employee is required to operate and maintain power tools, drive vehicles, climb ladders and perform physical activity. This position may require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work; stand and sit for prolonged periods of time. TheBuilding Maintenance Worker must operate with minimal direct supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Formal education or training in Building Maintenance or a related field. Other forms of post-secondary education and training, including teachings from Elders and Knowledge Keepers, will be considered.
  • Certificates or apprenticeship training in Plumbing, Electrical, Millwrighting or Carpentry is considered an asset.
  • 2 years of mechanical experience. Must be mechanically inclined and able to troubleshoot andperform repairs.
  • Physical stamina, physically fit, manual dexterity, and ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Experience using hand and power tools.
  • Good communication and relationship-building skills.

Responsibilities:

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Perform preventative maintenance procedures for Seabird buildings and equipment.
  • Maintain daily contact with the Supervisor to confirm work priorities, report on accomplishments and discuss maintenance activities.
  • Ensure building and equipment meet all safety, security and fire regulations and policies.
  • Assist with handling minor repairs relating to but not limited to the replacement of faucets, faulty window latches, broken tank toilet handles, unplugging clogging toilets and drains. Changing lightbulbs, tightening loose hinges or door mechanisms, diagnostic & repair of standalone door locks units (ie: batteries replacement) and other general maintenance tasks.
  • Perform carpentry, electrical, painting, mechanical and plumbing maintenance, and repairs such as repairing furniture, constructing shelves, installing switches, replacing plugs and other basic equipment repairs, applying paint and other finishes, repairing drywall, disassembling, and reassembling equipment, replacing sinks and toilets, and applying finishing material etc.
  • Assist in inspecting heating, cooling, water and electrical systems and report defects to your supervisor.
  • Assist with inspections of building drainage systems.
  • Make recommendations for minor/major repairs and purchases to your supervisor.
  • Assist with the preparation of estimates for material costs and purchase supplies though the PO system when and where required.
  • Assist with daily inspections of all band buildings (except community housing) to identify maintenance or repair requirements.
  • Complete and maintain related records such as maintenance and repair logs and safety/security incident reports.
  • Transport equipment, furniture and supplies manually and/or using aids such as dollies and carts.
  • Operate a motor vehicle to pick up and move goods and supplies. Report on any unsafe vehicles and equipment.
  • Notify supervisor of any deficiencies that will require the use of contractors/repairs.
  • May operate a computer which controls and monitors mechanical equipment and utility and heating systems. (Energy Management).
  • Always use appropriate safety equipment.
  • Work in cooperation with other maintenance staff to correct safety deficiencies.
