ABOUT US

The Faculty of Health Sciences ((FHS) is a large, diverse, and comprehensive unit, comprised of six Schools (Nursing, Kinesiology, Health Studies, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Communication Sciences and Disorders), a large Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and four Research Centres. The Faculty has more than 3,200 undergraduate students and more than 800 graduate students (200 PhD students).
The School of Physical Therapy develops and promotes excellence, leadership, and innovation in physical therapy research, education and clinical practice, with an immediate focus on harnessing and growing our strengths in musculoskeletal health.

PT912 - PHYSICAL THERAPY IN REHABILITATION SETTINGS I

This course is designed to expose students to patient populations commonly seen in a rehabilitation setting. Through the use of community patient volunteers, simulated patients, and case studies the students will learn the assessment, treatment planning and treatment intervention for a wide variety of impairments arising from stroke, amputation, and spinal cord injury.

We are looking for clinicians with expertise in treating people with neurological injury, preferably stroke or brain injury or spinal cord injury, who can teach basic handling/facilitation and exercise prescription skills to our entry-level students. You could be expected to lead a lab room or lead a lab.

  • Each lab room has 40 students and 2 instructors. Leading a Lab Room means leading the group of 40 students through a predetermined teaching plan, dictated by the Lab Lead. You could be responsible for providing skill demonstrations, pacing the tasks, providing one-to-one feedback, and collating and communicating summary feedback to the group throughout the lab. The second instructor in the room would be responsible for supporting you in the role, providing one-to-one feedback, and collating and communicating summary feedback to the group throughout the lab.
  • Leading a lab means you are the one to ensure materials are updated and available to the teaching team and students in a timely manner. You are also responsible for ensuring the teaching team is up to speed and that each lab room lead knows and understands the expectations. You’d also be responsible for debriefing the teaching team at the end of the session and communicating areas of strength/concern to the course manager.

Stroke is used as the first case example for skills development, and SCI is used as the case examples for skill development later in the course. The schedule below is offered to give prospective instructors a sense of when sessions occur, and which case types are used. There is no requirement that if (for example) you work in stroke that you’d only do the sessions using stroke as the case example.
The course runs for 7 weeks. Lab sessions are generally 2-3 hours and typically run in the afternoons, although some may run in the mornings. All instructors are required for the 2 assessments. Dates and number of sessions per week are offered below to provide an estimate of approximate time commitment. Please keep this in mind prior to considering the position.
Week 1 (Feb 24-28, 2025) – 1-2 sessions (CVA)
Week 2 (Mar 3-7) – 2-3 sessions (CVA)
Week 3 (Mar 10-14) – 3 sessions (CVA)
Week 4 (Mar 17-21) – 2 sessions (1 CVA,1 SCI), 1 Assessment
Week 5 (Mar 24-28) – 2-3 sessions (SCI)
Week 6 (Mar 31-Apr4) – 3 sessions (SCI)
Week 7 (Apr 7-11) – 1 Assessment

QUALIFICATIONS

Unless otherwise noted, candidates must have a Master’s degree (PhD preferred or be close to completion) and a demonstrated record of performance in university-level teaching.

Responsibilities:
