Description:
The European Spallation Source is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. The project includes the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built, a five-tonne, helium-cooled tungsten target wheel, 15 state-of-the-art neutron instruments, a suite of laboratories, and a supercomputing data management and software development centre. In the context of its history and future as a scientific organisation, however, it is more than the sum of its parts. It is a brand-new Big Science organisation and we are building it from the ground up.
Come and build the future of Science with us!
ABOUT YOU:
To thrive with us in the ECDC Group, you need to be driven, responsive and good at spotting both problems and opportunities. You need to be a highly motivated person who isn’t afraid to get stuck in from day one.
First and foremost, we need someone who is suitably qualified and experienced. You must have a degree or relevant higher qualification in a STEM or software-related subject as well as substantial programming experience in Python. Prior knowledge or experience in any of the following areas would also be a strong advantage for this role:

- A demonstrable track record of working as part of a larger team or collaboration.
We are building ESS from the ground up, so we need someone who is comfortable not only following procedures, but also creating them. We attach great importance to personality and attitude, so we’re looking for a real team player: Someone who enjoys communicating and collaborating with people of various backgrounds and areas of expertise. We need a hands-on, self-starter with the proven ability to take initiative. You should enjoy finding new solutions, and have a genuine desire to help this amazing project to realise its full potential.
The working language of ESS is English - but the ability to communicate in Swedish is always a bonus. For this role, we need someone who can start as soon as practically possible.
WHAT CAN WE OFFER?
Aside from the chance to work at truly unique big science project, you can also expect:
- An opportunity to contribute to the future discoveries within neutron science.
- A stunning, brand new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe.
- A challenging, innovative and stimulating work environment.
- Market competitive compensation that is individual and differentiated according to role, responsibilities, individual skills, abilities and achievements.
- 30 days of annual leave, as well as more than 10 days of public holiday and company days off or days with limited working hours.
- Monthly pension contributions on top of your salary.
If you see yourself in what we’re looking for, please provide your CV and motivation letter in English . Please be aware that we can only accept direct applications made via the ESS website.

ABOUT THE ROLE:
The ESS is at an exciting turning point. It is in transition from being a construction site, to being an operating facility. To help us realise our goal of being the most powerful neutron source in the world, we are now looking for two Data Acquisition Scientists to join our Experiment Control and Data Curation (ECDC) group. The small but growing ECDC team aims to produce the right tools for scientists to carry out cutting edge research, using all of the capabilities of our next generation neutron facility.
The tasks and responsibilities of the team include streamlining the user experience to allow the scientists to focus on their scientific goals, building and supporting the whole software data acquisition chain that users will be relying on to carry out their experiments as well as supporting scientists using ESS with their controls and data acquisition requirements.
In this interesting and unique role, you will work with the ECDC team to:
- Define, implement and support the NICOS control system which is the main software the users interact with;
- Develop other software within the ESS software framework to deliver a system that gives access to the full scientific capabilities of ESS;
- Propose solutions for scientific software projects to be carried out within the Experiment Control and Data Curation Group;
- Test, verify and validate software to be used for experiment control, data readout and processing;
- Carry out software commissioning and assist hardware testing at the ESS and at partner facilities;
- Support the operation of the ESS by performing the required maintenance tasks or devise solutions that automate deployment, diagnostics, and fault recovery.
- Support visiting scientists and ESS staff in using the whole data acquisition chain and the experiment control framework;
- Collaborate with colleagues within the ESS and other big science facilities world-wide.
This is a full-time, fixed-term position for a period of three (3) years and is based at the ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden.
First and foremost, we need someone who is suitably qualified and experienced. You must have a degree or relevant higher qualification in a STEM or software-related subject as well as substantial programming experience in Python. Prior knowledge or experience in any of the following areas would also be a strong advantage for this role:
- Development of user-facing software.
