Description:
ABOUT US
National Grid is at the heart of the UK energy network keeping people connected and society moving. We develop, own and maintain the physical infrastructure, such as pylons and cables needed to move the electricity generated from windfarms and power sources around the country. Every time a phone is plugged in, or a switch is turned on, we’ve played a part, connecting you to the electricity you need - and we’re leading the transformation towards a greener future, dreaming bigger to bring a more affordable energy future to everyone.
But it’s our people that provide our true superpower. They drive and sustain our growth, their unique differences only making us stronger. But it’s no small feat – and we need the best to join us in our mission. So, join us and power the future of energy.
Some of the key accountabilities will be:
- Assessment, calculation, issue and recording of protection settings, and voltage control settings for applications from 11kV to 132kV.
- The configuration of programmable scheme logic for protection relays.
- Specialist response to incidences of potential mal-operation of protection systems.
- Design and specification of substation plant and protection systems, for applications up to 132kV.
- Preparation of concept substation designs at pre-sanction stage, including merits of alternative scheme options and costings
Responsibilities:
We’re National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED), the owner and operator behind the electricity distribution systems for the Midlands, the Southwest of England and South Wales. Serving communities of more than 8 million people, our expert teams deliver heat, light and power for homes and businesses.
National Grid employs over 29,000 people worldwide. We are building an inclusive workplace, a place to actively celebrate the cultures, personalities and preferences of our colleagues – who in turn help to build the success of our business and reflect the diversity of the communities we serve. Our vision is to be at the heart of a clean, fair and affordable energy future and we are doing this in a fast-moving industry with an increasing focus on tackling climate change, exploring new energy sources that are renewable, low carbon, and improve efficiency to meet demand.
As a Trainee Engineering Design Graduate you will learn to prepare electrical, protection/control, mechanical and civil designs for schemes to construct, extend or modify electricity substation. The team set substation design strategies, policies and drive innovative thinking. You will assist teams with the assessment of substation options and develop selected schemes from a broad engineering brief into a fully specified build package. The team also has responsibility for the preparation, storage and Network Service protection relay configurations and settings. You will learn about what NGED does, why and how.
