The Equipment Engineer is part of the equipment engineering team who provides expertise, service, and support to San Diego Illumina headquarters by maintaining equipment at world class levels in a fast pace regulated environment and providing high level reliability exceeding Illumina’s dynamic development and manufacturing demands. The Equipment Engineer will work in a dynamic team-oriented environment that supports multiple operations and technologies helping Illumina deliver its highly complex product pipeline in a reliable and sustainable manner.
The Equipment Engineer will support the day to day manufacturing equipment maintenance operations by owning components of systems to large systems, with different engagements of oversight to no oversight depending on proficiency and experience.
Responsibilities:
- Represent discipline
- Coordinate to manage vendors and engineering contractors
- Generate standard operating procedures/Work instructions
- Make suggestions for continuous improvement and cost savings
- Plan, manage, prioritize, coordinate, and or execute multiple parallel activities like calibrations, preventive maintenance, supplier support, project activities, and ensure work is completed on-time.
- Sustaining Engineering
- Development and implementation of procedures to reduce or eliminate sources of systematic equipment failures; continuous improvement and cost savings initiatives
- Investigation and resolution of technical problems
- Use optical, mechanical, electrical, and or fluidics knowledge to perform equipment troubleshooting.
- Work in a team environment to improve equipment reliability and uptime.
- While performing the duties of this job, is regularly required to stand, sit, walk, climb stairs/ladders, kneel, crouch, or wear safety gear. Must regularly lift and / or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
The position is an Engineer 1 on 2nd shift. The shift is Monday – Friday. The shift has a start time of 2:00 PM.
Requirements:
- Ability to learn and understand component level failures
- Ability to operate in a fast pace environment, adapt to changes in priority, and redirect efforts as necessary.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office and Windows
- Chemical Analytical equipment repair and troubleshooting is preferred
- Computer trouble-shooting and repair (preferred experience with Microsoft Windows)
- Data collection, analysis and able to summarize results
- Experience using engineering troubleshooting tools
- Experience with electrical and mechanical schematics
- Experience in high volume manufacturing environment preferred
- Good to Excellent Math and analytical skills
- Good to Excellent Verbal and written documentation skills in English
- Knowledge of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) would be a plus
- Knowledgeable of optical/mechanical/electrical and or fluidic systems knowledge of machine language (PLC, HMI, I/O)
- Work experience in Life Sciences / Pharmaceutical / Medical Devices industries would be an advantage

Experience/Education:
- At 1-2 years of related experience with a BS or equivalent work experience
- Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Chemical, and Industrial Engineering preferred
- Experience working in a clinically regulated environment is highly desirable
- Experience working in a high-volume manufacturing environment maintaining production equipment required for higher level positions
The estimated base salary range for the Equipment Engineer 1 - 2nd Shift role based in the United States of America is: $61,700 - $92,500. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
