Description:
Are you looking for a role that will challenge you? If you answered yes, then this may be the job for you! The scope of the Fuel Program Division (FPD) encompasses developing and executing an integrated strategy to safely manage and dispose of more than 500 tonnes (by heavy element) of irradiated fuel from over 20 reactors across Canada.
The CNL irradiated fuel inventory, comprised of a broad variety of unique research reactor fuel types and exotic experimental fuel assemblies, rivals the complexity of any other national fuel inventory. It also includes a large quantity of a unique waste forms, High-Enriched Uranium (HEU)-bearing Cemented Target Material (CTM), the disposal pathway of which must be identified and developed.
Fuel inventories are currently stored at multiple facilities across all CNL sites. Consolidation of these fuel inventories will enable the pre-conditioning required to meet disposal criteria. In addition this work will enable decommissioning and closure of these offsite locations.
More than 40,000 remote-handled packages of Intermediate- and High-Level Waste will be retrieved and conditioned over the next 40 years. Many of these waste packages will be severely degraded and contain pyrophoric material that will require processing and stabilization to permit safe storage, transportation, and disposal.
The Fuel Program Technologists primary role is the execution of field activities that include but are not limited to operating transfer flask, shipping flasks and interface equipment to ensure the safe recovery, handling and shipping of used fuel between CRL sites.
