Description:
The Transfusion Practitioner is a key contributor to patient safety, staff training/ education and the cost-effective use of blood and blood components within the Trust. They will be required to educate nursing, medical and multidisciplinary staff in the management of patients receiving blood and blood components and the transfusion process, in ensuring that agreed guidelines and protocols are adhered to. The overall purpose of the job is to work Trust-wide with staff from all relevant disciplines to promote safe, appropriate and economic use of blood and blood components whilst developing strategies within the Trust to fulfil the requirements of: National Blood Transfusion Committees 2014 Patient Blood Management strategy Recommendations from SHOT (Serious Hazards of Transfusion) Risk management standards specified by CNST (Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts) The EU Directive on Blood Safety, leading to the UK Blood Safety and Quality Regulations 2005. The role post holder will be expected to act as a specialist expert resource, providing advice, support and education for clinical staff.
They will work in collaboration with the Hospital Blood Transfusion Laboratory Manager along with medical, nursing, and other staff groups to develop standards and protocols for using blood and blood products, ensuring a robust process for updating Trusts protocols and policies. The job involves visiting wards and clinical areas, and liaising with staff in an investigative, advisory and teaching capacity. There is also a requirement to liaise with staff in the community hospitals about all blood transfusion related issues
