SUMMARY
The Human-Centered Designer (HCD) is a key player in the Office of Connected Care, leading the development and implementation of innovative solutions across the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). The HCD ensures that all projects, products, and services are designed with the needs of Veterans, employees, and other stakeholders at the forefront. This role involves applying human-centered design methodologies to uncover deep insights, define problems, and ideate solutions that drive real impact. The HCD will work closely with cross-functional teams, facilitating empathy-based research, synthesizing findings into actionable insights, and translating them into tangible outputs like journey maps, personas, and prototypes.
The HCD will also provide strategic guidance to leadership and act as a bridge between veterans, service organizations, and government agencies to ensure that Veteran voices are heard and integrated into all design processes. This position supports various projects, including the rollout of digital health tools, telehealth services, and diversity and inclusion initiatives.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Human-Centered Design Expertise: Demonstrated experience leading human-centered design projects from research to implementation. Strong understanding of qualitative research methods, empathy-driven inquiry, and design synthesis tools (e.g., journey maps, personas).
- Leadership and Collaboration: Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and collaborate with senior leaders, government agencies, and community organizations. Strong partnership-building skills are essential.
- Strategic Thinking: Ability to translate research insights into strategic solutions that drive performance and align with organizational goals. Experience in aligning design initiatives with long-term planning and innovation roadmaps.
- Communication and Facilitation: Excellent communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to guide diverse teams through complex design processes and ensure stakeholder alignment.
- Veterans Affairs Experience Preferred: Familiarity with Veterans Affairs programs, particularly within the Office of Connected Care or Veterans Experience Office, is highly desirable.
This role provides a unique opportunity to directly impact the lives of Veterans by designing inclusive, user-centered, and empathy-based solutions.
Responsibilities:
- Strategic Project Leadership: Lead and manage design projects from discovery to implementation. Work with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to scope projects, conduct contextual inquiries, and ensure user needs drive solutions.
- Human-Centered Design Facilitation: Facilitate qualitative research, including field observations and user interviews, to uncover deep insights. Apply design tools such as journey maps, personas, and empathy mapping to synthesize findings into actionable solutions.
- Innovation Implementation: Translate research into impactful products, services, and policies. Work closely with leadership to drive strategic initiatives, including telehealth, diversity, and digital health solutions.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Partner with Veteran Service Organizations, federal agencies, and internal VA teams to ensure collaborative, inclusive design solutions. Serve as a trusted advisor, providing design leadership and promoting customer-centered innovation.
- Voice of the Veteran Champion: Ensure the voice of the Veteran is central to every solution. Advocate for Veteran needs across all levels of the organization, using insights to design more inclusive and equitable experiences.
