REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB

  • Holds current Certificate of Competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse
  • Two (2) years’ clinical experience in a related health care field or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Completion of a recognized Infection Prevention and Control Course endorsed by the Community & Hospital Infection Control Association - Canada
  • Possess a Certification in Infection Control (CIC) from the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC) or be willing to obtain within three (3) years of hire
  • Training and expertise in regards to CSA Standard Z317.13 Infection Control During Construction, Renovation, and Maintenance of Health Care Facilities
  • Experience in infection prevention and control related to surveillance, education, consultation, occupational health liaison, research and policy development
  • Knowledge of standards of care, best practice, and legislative requirements for nursing and infection prevention and control and infection diseases
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, teaching and communication skills
  • Superior written, verbal and presentation skills
  • Functional proficiency in both official languages (oral and written in English; oral in French – and testing completed)

General Accountabilities:

  • Assists in the maintenance of Infection Prevention and Control policies and procedures at CCH
  • Conducts day-to-day surveillance
  • Provides clinical support and counsel to clinical/professional staff, other Infection Prevention and Control Practitioners
  • Conducts audit activities and monitors compliance with Infection Prevention and Control policies, procedures, strategies, and standards
  • Participates in outbreak investigation and management
  • Provide consultation concerning sterilization and disinfection, internal maintenance, renovation and construction activities, patient care practices, product evaluation etc.
  • Provides consultation on infection control and prevention workflows, PPE and/or best practices for any hospital staff/program
  • Liaison with physicians regarding hospitalized patients and community problems
  • Liaison with Medical Officer of Health and Eastern Ontario Health Unit re communicable diseases and feedback on community-based problems
  • Presents Infection Prevention and Control education at General Orientation, Nursing Orientation and to healthcare workers, medical staff, volunteers and students as require

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Director Infection Prevention and Control and Occupational Health and Safety, the incumbent will support the strategic goals and objectives of the Cornwall Community Hospital’s Infection Prevention and Control Program. He/she will provide infection prevention and control expertise and consultation to staff and physicians and assist the other members of the Infection Prevention and Control Program team with the development and implementation of all functions and activities of the Program.
The Infection Prevention and Control Nurse develops infection prevention and control practices, policies and procedures, to ensure compliance with legislation and best practices for the well-being of patients, healthcare workers and visitors. He/she directs all functions, processes and activities including active surveillance, outbreak prevention and control, education and training of health care workers, patients and their families and on-going evaluation and continuous improvement of the Infection Prevention and Control Program. He/she will be on-call and work evenings and weekends as required (on a rotational basis).
