The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Manager, Legal and Coronial to provide a critical role within Corrections and Justice Services.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A suitable tertiary qualification in public policy, health or law is desirable.

Responsibilities:

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Manager, Legal and Coronial will manage Justice Health’ responses to legal requests, including statements and affidavits, responses to recommendations resulting from internal reviews, coronial and other inquiries.
To be successful, you will have broad experience in legal policy and program development, ideally with a health or justice focus, along with strong stakeholder management skills and an effective understanding of government processes. You will be able to understand new subject matter quickly, demonstrate appropriate initiative, and have a strong capacity to write accurate, timely and audience-appropriate documents and briefings.
This work requires timely responses to various and numerous requests for information and advice, in a time pressured environment.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Manage Justice Health’ responses to legal requests, including statements and affidavits, responses to recommendations resulting from internal reviews, coronial and other inquiries.
  • Develop and maintain sound systems and processes for tracking and responding to legal requests that fosters a culture of accountability, whilst encouraging innovation and problem solving.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including the Victorian Government Solicitor’s Office and the department’s Office of General Counsel to support responses to legal requests.

The Adult Health Oversight Unit is responsible for:

  • oversight of the delivery of health services across the Victorian adult correctional system.
  • ensuring service providers work collaboratively to ensure integrated and coordinated approaches to meeting the needs of men and women in custody.
  • driving ongoing improvements to service delivery

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Sound knowledge of and/ or experience in Victorian government administrative processes, including preparation of materials to support court appearances.
  • Previous experience in providing public sector policy or legal advice, with clinical or health knowledge highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of current policy directions, research and issues within health, corrections or the criminal justice system more broadly, or the ability to understand these issues quickly.
  • Strong conceptual and analytical skills, with the ability to analyse complex operational, policy and legal issues, interpret legislation to support Justice Health
