JOB SUMMARY

The Medical Records Technician II (Cancer Registry) assists in the day-to-day operations of the Newfoundland and Labrador Cancer Care Registry. The Medical Records Technician II completes abstracting and disease registration of all cancers diagnosed in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Medical Records Technician II performs cancer staging for all registered cancer. Cancer staging is done according to Canadian cancer staging rules and requirements, which are subject to change. The Medical Records Technician II participates in ongoing training and subject matter webinars. Additionally the Medical Records Technician II analyzes and identifies charts for data quality and chart deficiencies, orientates and trains new staff and performs other related duties as required.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Successful completion of a recognized/approved two-year program in Health Records Administration or Health Information Management is required.
Current and continuing certification as a Tumour Registrar by the National Cancer Registrars Association is required.*
Current and continuing certification as a Certified Health Information Management (CHIM) professional with the Canadian College of Health Information Management is required.
A minimum of two years of experience within the last four working as a Medical Records Technician I (Cancer Registry) is required.
Demonstrated strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
Demonstrated independence and a strong attention to detail.

A satisfactory record of work performance is required.

  • If there are no applicants who possess the Tumour Registrar certification, the successful candidate will be required to obtain this certification within 24 months of commencing in the position.
