Description:

POSITION SUMMARY

Applications are invited for the role of Post-Doctoral Researcher at the School of Microbiology and APC Microbiome Ireland.
Project Background: Staphylococcus aureus is a major human pathogen that is highly effective at evading every protective measure that have been developed, including antibiotics and vaccines. As a result, broad-spectrum approaches to tackling infectious disease are no longer effective and more targeted and resistance-proof therapeutic approaches need to be developed. However, to achieve this a comprehensive understanding of how these pathogens cause disease is needed. To address this the Massey team as part of a larger Wellcome Trust Discovery Award Team comprised of researchers at UCC, TCD, and the Universities of Bristol and Exeter have established a collaboration with the SNAP Trial (https://www.snaptrial.com.au). SNAP is an innovative trial to evaluate a range of interventions with the aim of improving outcomes for patients with Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia (AKA bloodstream infections), with trial sites across the world. The aim of this global collaboration is to build a definitive picture of all the bacterial and host factors that contribute to the development of disease, which can then be mapped to the most effective treatment for individual patients.
Role: There are two postdoctoral positions available, and the successful candidates will have experience in applying molecular approaches to studying the biology of microorganism. These may include bacterial culturing and manipulation, DNA cloning, construction of mutants, qRT-PCR, western blotting and tissue culture. Developing high throughout screens for the phenotyping of thousands of clinical strains will also be involved, as these will then be mapped back to the genome sequence and MALDI-TOF profiles.
UCC is an accredited research organisation and as such can form hosting agreements with third country nationals (and non-EEA nationals) for the purpose of conducting research in the University.
Project Title: Defining the critical host - pathogen interactions that affect patient outcome during Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia.
Post Duration: 48 Months
Salary: €44,347 - €50,805 per annum, (IUA PD1 Salary Scale)
