THE ROLE

No one wants to hear noise from their neighbors or to be overheard by their neighbors, yet unwanted neighbor noise in residential buildings is a problem that affects almost everyone at some time in their lives. The National Building Code of Canada includes acoustic requirements for dwellings, but few acousticians have experience with the measurements of the vibration reduction index (Kij) according to ISO 10848 required to predict the transmission of noise in buildings to demonstrate compliance with the Code. As Canada moves towards increased densification and lower-cost constructions with a reduced carbon footprint, there is a growing need for experts who can measure and predict the transmission of structure-borne noise in buildings.
As a member of the building acoustics group within the Construction Research Centre at the NRC, the successful candidate will work closely with the team members to make Kij measurements in the NRC’s unique four room flanking facility and on full scale mock-up junctions of lightweight timber and mass timber building elements. The measurement data will be used for empirical models to predict the transmission of structure-borne noise in timber building constructions.
