We are currently seeking a high calibre professional to join our team as a Principal Engineer – Domestic and Emerging Payments.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE PROFILE

  • Strong technology experience including extensive years of leadership experience in technology and architecture – preferably in Banking and financial services (Payments is a plus).
  • An understanding of API technology, containerisation, micro services.
  • Exposure to regulatory requirements and demands is desirable.
  • Experience of managing/influencing dev teams including managers, engineers, designers, vendor resources etc. across multiple locations and geographies in matrix model.
  • Ability to effectively drive and lead change in a global organization like HSBC in terms of scale, size and complexity
  • Strong knowledge and experience of managing financial, operation, market and regulatory drivers impacting complex and dynamic technology environment
  • Strong understanding of global technology trends especially in the Payments domain
  • Sound experience of building, leading, developing and retaining high performing teams.
  • Effective decision-making, influencing, critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Strong business and technology acumen, and proven experience in building a vision and developing strategy supporting the vision.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities:

ROLE PURPOSE

Business Context:
Global Payments is core to bank’s business and anchor to the vast majority of our client relationships. Our footprint is across 55 markets, and we process over 4B payments every year of which a significant contribution comes from the Domestic and Emerging Payments space. Given the massive pace of transformation and innovations in the payments industry, real-time payments, merchant acquiring services, cards, virtual account management play a major role in contributing to our global payments strategy, client and market needs.
Payment’s space is undergoing a significant uplift driven by demanding client needs for real-time services, robust treasury management and significant scale requirements at the back of high volumes to be processed. Real-Time is becoming the norm along with message standardization and the need for 24/7 processing. To meet this rapidly changing industry, there is a need to develop a robust domestic payments infrastructure that’s scalable on-demand and always-on powered by a future ready architecture to cater to our client and market demands. There is a massive opportunity to make payments mainstream cutting across the bank and deliver a utility service while catering for the GPS business and client needs.
This role is situated within the Domestic & Emerging (DOME) Payments Technology and will be supporting the Global Head, Domestic & Emerging Payments, Technology as well as working closely with GPS DOME Product, Operations, Technology partners. The incumbent exists to grow the capability of our engineering organization to increase customer value through implementing the right technical solutions in the right way. Principal Engineers (PE’s) are “a key technical consultant in a deep area of expertise or across multiple areas. The job holder is a strategist, shaping engineering business decisions and processes. PEs also provide leadership for technical disciplines, competencies and professions, and develop architectures, standards, and tools.”

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • The PE role usually stands at the near top of this technical career track.
  • PEs are expected to provide technical advice to senior management when making major decisions. The job holder are also expected to solve complex problems that have a business critical impact, and to form task forces that are assigned to address one-off issues.
  • Shape Engineering strategy and delivery for GPS
  • Create commercially valuable products or services through innovative use of technology
  • Contribute to the wider technology community through conference presentations, white papers, blog posts
  • Mentor technology talent and take an active role in the development of others
  • Working in tandem with the key engineering leadership to draw the roadmap of the new scalable elevated architecture to accelerate business delivery.
  • As the lead engineer, also is responsible for architectural and code quality, tracking technical and architectural risk and working with delivery leads and product owners on priority
  • The role will encompass accountability for application design, development and testing through to production implementation.
  • Ensure strong operating environment for high quality delivery, faster time-to-market and continual productivity improvements.
  • Provide thought leadership on latest DevOps and Agile development methodologies, innovation and transformation, and have the ability to evolve, modify and adapt in a dynamic environment.
  • Managing the required cross-skilling and re/up-skilling of the organization to deliver strong change agenda.
  • Manage various senior management stakeholders across Technology, Ops and Business teams.
  • Building capability for effective engagement and execution as well as building thought leadership for wider adoption of DevOps/Agile, APIs and reusable services.
  • Lead and drive proactive risk management culture
  • Ownership and Accountability in a matrix based environment

Role Context:

  • The role will be based in Singapore or India and supporting DOME IT team.
  • Operates without appreciable guidance from others but is a clear role model within the team.
  • Interaction with all levels of management to provide technical/functional leadership
