Process Engineering Student, Calgary (12-16 months, May 2025 start)
In this 12 or 16-month internship role you will join the Optimization Team based in Calgary, with opportunity to spend time at our site in Christina Lake, Alberta.
During your work term, you will gain valuable process engineering skills that are critical to our business and transferable to many future roles. You will have the opportunity to take on projects in water treatment, steam, oil processing and more; many of these will have an environmental focus towards emission reduction and water conservation. Previous students in this team have gained experience with multiple projects (upwards of 20) and completed an end of term presentation before senior leadership highlighting their best 3 projects that made an impact to the business.
The ideal candidate will have a keen interest in learning and contributing to the oil sands industry as demonstrated through coursework, past employment, or other student-industry engagement.
Your Day to Day will include:
- Assist Calgary and site‐based process engineering staff in troubleshooting and resolving plant operational issues
- Carry out process calculations, prepare equipment and instrumentation datasheets under the direction of operations process engineers.
- Prepare or assist in the preparation of technical and economic feasibility scoping studies on plant improvement opportunities.
- Manage the revisions to engineering records (P&ID’s, Control Narratives, Shut Down Keys, etc.) needed to document operational changes.
- Occasional travel to site on a regular basis to interface with plant process engineering and operations staff.
- Work with Mechanical, Process Controls, Electrical and Project Engineers to progress your projects through engineering design to construction and implementation.
- As a member of the MEG Optimization team, you will be given the chance to take on responsibilities that make a direct impact on production rates and environmental stewardship.
- Your day-to-day priorities and scope of work will be directed by a Senior Optimization Process Engineer
What you will bring to MEG:
- Third‐year engineering student enrolled in a chemical, mechanical, petroleum or environmental engineering (or other related engineering programs).
- Experience in the Alberta Oil and Gas industry is an asset
- Basic knowledge of practical application of Engineering along with principles, techniques, procedures
- Basic awareness of SAGD operations, system analysis skills and ability to anticipate and solve complex problems
- Strong analytical reasoning skills as well as verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to manage a complex workload in a fast‐paced work environment, work collaboratively with a multi‐disciplinary team, meet critical deadlines with little supervision and learn to navigate new software and systems
