Title: Psychiatric Nurse, Substance Use Disorder Specialist - es zúmin’ Primary Care Centre
Salary: $84,217 - $ 95,728 per year (pay range explained below)
Contract: This position is a 2-year term with the FNHA. When the term position ends with the FNHA, it is intended that this position will be offered as a permanent role with the es zúmin’ Primary Care Clinic.
Hours: Standard Hours - 37.5 hours per week
Location: Mount Currie, BC, with frequent travel to the Southern Stl’atl’imx communities, which are up to 3 hours away by road.
Bargaining Unit: PIPSC BCFNHA Group (Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada)
- The FNHA is engaged in active collective agreement negotiations and rates of pay will be adjusted to reflect 2024 rates in the near future.
EDUCATION
- Bachelor’s degree in registered nursing or bachelor’s degree or diploma in psychiatric nursing, from a recognized university or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
- Additional training and education related to substance use, harm reduction, mental health and trauma informed practice
- Completion of BCCSU RN/RPN Prescribing Education Program is an asset, or willingness to take the training
EXPERIENCE
- Three (3) years of experience as a registered nurse (RN) or registered psychiatric nurse (RPN) providing clinical practice support in primary care, community and/or public health nursing or acute care, ambulatory care and/or outpatient centers
- Two (2) years of experience caring for clients with harm reduction and substance use concerns
- Experience working with and delivering health services to First Nations clients
- Training in anti-Indigenous racism response, cultural safety, and humility
- Experience integrating holistic Indigenous approaches with Western approaches
KNOWLEDGE
- Strong knowledge and ability to apply cultural safety, humility, and trauma informed approaches in practice
- Knowledge of population health status, health inequities, health and illness determinants, primary care principles, health promotion strategies, disease and injury prevention, health protection, curative, urgent and emergent care, rehabilitation, harm reduction and supportive care
- Knowledge of the nursing process, conceptual frameworks of nursing, and theories and principles of nursing practice
- Knowledge of evidence-based clinical nursing practice, including the delivery of mental health and substance use treatment services, opiate agonist treatment options, current clinical practices, techniques of brief interventions, and the required knowledge and skill in observing, assessing, and caring for individuals requiring nursing support in the area of mental health and substance use
- Knowledge of, and ability to apply, an understanding of First Nations cultural principles and protocols in work situations
- Knowledge of concurrent disorders and complexity of intergenerational trauma on addiction
- Understanding of own intersectionality, power, privilege, and how these concepts may impact own work and perspectives
- Comprehensive knowledge of and experience in group dynamics, individual counselling and family therapy

Responsibilities:
The Psychiatric Nurse delivers professional nursing support and educational activities to clients of the Primary Care Centre in relation to mental health and substance use. They will provide direct support to improve nursing practice standards in the Southern Stl’atl’imx sub-region with a focus on the activity of RN/RPN prescribing of opiate agonist treatment and addressing the toxic drug crisis.
