Description:

Under the general direction of the Manager of Human Resources (HRM), the Safety Officer leads delivery of departmental safety services. The Safety Officer is the department’s subject matter expert on workplace safety, providing timely information, research, advice, guidance, leadership and support to promote compliance with safety legislation and prevent workplace injury and illness. This includes engaging with all departmental stakeholders to identify hazards, risks and emerging safety trends and recommending corrective or preventative actions to prevent workplace safety incidents. This also includes planning, implementation, evaluation and continuous improvement of the department’s safety program in accordance with the SAFE Work Certified standard and all legal and organizational requirements. The Safety Officer develops and delivers or coordinates the delivery of safety training and educational resources. The Safety Officer may supervise one or more staff members providing daily direction, guidance and mentorship.

As the Safety Officer, you will:

  • Provide timely information, advice, guidance, leadership and support to department on workplace safety and health matters.
  • Lead development, implementation and maintenance of the departmental safety program in accordance with the SAFE Work Certified standard, legal and other requirements.
  • Develop and deliver or coordinates the delivery of safety training and educational resources.
  • Lead, supervise, coach and develop employees.

YOUR EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:

  • Graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution in the field of Occupational Safety and Health.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (at time of hire or to be attained within two years of start date).
  • Intermediate First Aid/CPR Certificate (FA2) (at time of hire or to be attained within 6 months).
  • Train the Trainer Course (within 6 months of hire).
  • A minimum of three (3) years prior related leadership experience in the safety and health function.
  • Experience leading, supervising and developing employees.
  • Experience investigating serious incidents and dangerous occurrences.
  • Experience delivering training and presentations.
  • Experience conducting worksite and equipment inspections, hazard assessments and providing recommendations.
  • In depth knowledge and understanding of hazards and their control for a wide range of work activities.
  • In depth knowledge and understanding of safety and health legislation, standards, and accepted guidelines.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions during an emergency, including a serious accident or fatality.
  • Organizational skills with the ability to establish work priorities in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, management, union officials, government agencies and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound judgement.
  • Ability to conduct research and provide options and recommendations.
  • Ability to lead and facilitate working groups and initiatives.
  • Strong written communication skills with the ability to write clear and concise reports, procedures and other types of documents.
  • Knowledge of environmental testing and monitoring equipment and procedures.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
