JOB DESCRIPTION: SENIOR TECHNICIAN – MECHANICAL WORKSHOP

Position Purpose: To provide technical and workshop support across the College of Sciences,
predominantly on the Manawatū campus, for the College’s teaching,
research, project and commercial functions. Ensuring compliance with
relevant Health and Safety and other legislative or policy requirements.
Will carry out specialised techniques and will train others in these and
essential core functions.

Job Title: Senior Technician – Mechanical Workshop

ACCOUNTABILITIES

Workshop • Design, construct and install equipment and apparatus as required by
Operations academic staff and students for research, teaching and commercial

projects.

  • Write brief maintenance manuals for new apparatus built.
  • Support the Workshop Manager through provision of information for

preparation of quotes, ordering materials and equipment, and

expediting delivery, installation and commissioning.

  • Contribute to maintenance of an informal list of qualified suppliers.
  • Maintain and foster strong working relationships with other staff in

workshops mechanical, electrical, instrument, electronic) across the

College of Sciences.

  • Maintain awareness of new engineering processes, equipment and

materials

  • Provide engineering support for teaching facilities across the College of

Sciences.

  • Provide detailed equipment specifications, design, and manufacture

service, in a consultative manner, to support postgraduate and staff

research, and College of Sciences projects.

  • Provide practical consultancy and guidance to staff, students, and

external stakeholders in relation to the teaching programmes, research

projects and industry projects.

  • Maintenance, preventative maintenance, and development of

workshop and laboratory equipment.

  • Provide support and advice for purchase of new equipment and

installation.

  • Induction, training, and supervision of others approved for using

workshop equipment.

  • Ensuring proactive safety supervision while providing an accessible

workshop environment.

  • Liaison with other College of Sciences and University staff as required.
  • Maintain good housekeeping in the workshops.
  • Maintain security of the workshops, equipment, and resources.
  • Undertake other appropriate duties as requested by the Manager,

Engineering Services
Procurement • Request quotes for the Workshop Manager to review and enable

placement of orders.

  • Ensure goods received are correct and of the required specification.
  • Make cost-effective choices around what is ordered and when.
  • Ensure compliant storage, disposal, and appropriate registration

(Massey’s “Vertere” system) of dangerous goods.

Health and Safety • Maintain an organized and safe working environment.

  • Ensure appropriate safety standards and compliance requirements

are met by following the HSNO, EPA, MPI and Worksafe NZ
regulations when working around hazardous substances and new
organisms in laboratories.

  • Ensure all required HSNO documentation is maintained and current.
  • Ensure workspace and equipment hazard assessments and mitigation

procedures are documented and updated.

  • Act as Person in Charge in assigned workspaces for the purpose of

Health and Safety at Work act 2017 while carrying out maintenance

and repairs.

  • Become trained and function as a Fire Warden.
  • Obtain and maintain a current First Aid Certificate.

through teamwork and cooperation.

  • Participate in community activities that further advance the

profession or field and which are consistent with the University

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Qualifications • New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Trade) (Level 4),

in either Fitting and Machining or General Engineering., or equivalent.

  • A First Aid Certificate is desirable.
  • A forkhoist operator licence is desirable.
  • A Heavy Goods Vehicle licence is desirable.
  • A current Electrical Appliance Serviceperson registration is desirable.

Experience • Work experience in a senior role in general engineering workshops

  • Work experience with the maintenance and repair of scientific

equipment.

Workshop • Ability to design and manufacture precision components from a variety of

and research-led teaching within the College.

  • Proficient computer skills and ability to use common programs including 3D

design/print and CAM packages.

  • Ability to ensure and maintain safe work practices both in workshop and on

site.

  • Well-developed communication skills, including written and oral.
  • Ability to liaise and coordinate activities of external engineering contractors.
  • Ability to carry out preventative maintenance activities.

IT applications • Proficient with a range of software packages such as Word, Excel and
Outlook, and IT applications of specialist scientific equipment.
Specific Skills • Competence in use and safe handling of gas cylinders, associated regulators,

and equipment.
