We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Underwriter to join an established underwriting team in a rapidly growing and dynamic segment. The individual will be responsible for servicing a renewal book and producing new business through exceptional underwriting practices for Canada.
A Senior Underwriter will have significant input as to the strategic direction of the business as well as providing valued input on underwriting rules, guidelines and procedures. They will be responsible for portfolio profitability, account pricing, portfolio rate change, renewal retention, marketing, new business production, development of staff and broker and client management.
This person must possess broad technical expertise across various classes of business and may personally handle the more complex risks within the territory. In addition, the role holder will act as a senior contact for insureds and brokers in the assigned geographic territory.
A Senior Underwriter is required to support AXA XL’s branding and marketing objectives by attending various industry and broker events, conferences and meetings. Travel to accomplish this objective is required. Furthermore, they will support AXA XL’s cross-sell objectives by understanding capabilities across other lines of business and maintaining open communication with colleagues in other departments.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) required; professional designations preferred.
- Extensive underwriting experience in Miscellaneous Professional Liability and Architects & Engineers Professional Liability, policy development, broker management in the respective line(s) of business.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, communication including active listening skills, networking, marketing and collaboration skills evidencing public speaking and presentation experience.
- Ability to develop and maintain relationships with customers, producers and brokers.

- Outstanding technical skills with Microsoft Office and other relevant applications.

Responsibilities:
- Partner with the department leaders for Professional Liability and Design Professional to evaluate the current book of business and set a short- and long-term course of action.
- Ensure the achievement of continued profitability and growth of the portfolio by underwriting new and renewal submissions including applications, loss runs, financial reports and supplemental underwriting information to determine terms & conditions, policy wording appropriate for the underlying risk and in accordance with business unit goals.
- Working with agents and brokers to identify targeted accounts and increase opportunities in preferred classes of business and segments.
- Proactively advising, assisting, servicing and following up with clients and brokers on insurance and risk management matters.
- Collaborating with underwriters, actuaries and claims staff by providing insight on complex risks though roundtable underwriting opportunities.
- Participating in cross-functional projects and RRIs to improve profitability of the portfolio through various underwriting, operational efficiency and distribution initiatives.
- Effective relationship management with clients and broker partners to drive new business and renewal retention.
- Controlling timely implementation of new and renewed accounts according to quality standards.
- Maintain compliance with all internal and external underwriting guidelines and legal requirements
