Department Overview OHSU Family Medicine is part of OHSU School of Medicine. OHSU Family Medicine is focused on family health. We provide preventive, primary and specialty care for you, your children, your spouse, your parents and your grandparents. We provide all that family medicine has to offer - from maternity care through geriatrics. Family Medicine strongly supports the comprehensive scope to provide the highest level of care for our community. The clinical work includes but is not limited to all ages of life including newborn to end of life, taking care of those are pregnant, and supporting patients with substance use disorder including medication-assisted treatment and gender affirming care. OHSU embraces diversity and welcomes all patients. Family Medicine clinics are home to more than 120,000 + patients every year, but despite the large number, our physicians, nurses and other clinic staff know their patients - and their families - by name. Providers are drawn to OHSU Family Medicine mission and values-driven culture. The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service. Function/Duties of Position (0.20 FTE) As Sports Medicine Medical Director – this person will oversee the Sports Medicine service line across all family medicine clinics and collaborate closely with partners in Orthopedics, Internal Medicine, Physical Therapy, and other departments within the OHSU system. Oversee the growth and maintenance of the Sports Medicine Physicians (SMP) within the Department of Family Medicine (DFM). Interact with DFM on appropriate administrative work including managing personnel work at different sites as relates to SMP and clinics. Maintain Off Campus Authorizations (OCAs), Program Letter of Agreements (PLAs), contracts and relationships with the many community entities that are shareholders with the SMP at OHSU. Collaborate to build a collaborative, interdisciplinary Sports Medicine presence across the OHSU system. This includes collaborative efforts with Orthopedics, Internal Medicine, Physical Therapy, and other division and departments within OHSU system. Grow OHSU Sports Medicine presence across new OHSU partnerships – including Tuality/Hillsboro, Adventist, Legacy and others. Increase the Sports Medicine research footprint within the DFM and the larger Sports Medicine Collaborative. Responsible for the maintenance and continued development of the OHSU Portland State (PSU) collaborative. Currently this is a 10-year contractual relationship between OHSU and PSU which involves direct physician services (Orthopedics, SMP FM, and Physical Therapy). Responsible for the maintenance and continued development of additional college and high school Sports Medicine collaborations. These contracts involve direct physician services providing patient care in the community and extends OHSU’s mission to provide “health for all.” Responsible for the oversight and coordination of any Professional Teams Sports Medicine contracts where OHSU is providing contracted care to professional athletes. Maintain the OHSU Sports Medicine concussion program – which ideally includes a SMP, a clinical Neuropsychologist, BH support, and an exercise medicine specialist. Support and collaboration with the Sports Medicine Fellowship Director to ensure the sustainability and growth of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship within OHSU FM. Faculty development role for SMP to enhance and support faculty in promotions efforts and clinical career development work at OHSU. Ensures this program demonstrates OHSU’s strong commitment to diversity in medical education, including in race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, cultural background, disability status, and learning style. Lead Meetings with SMP group monthly. Grow and maintain the educational mission of OHSU Sports Medicine – for both local learners (medical students, residents and fellows), and for continuing medical education (currently including the AMSSM OHSU Sports Ultrasound course) and the OHSU Sports Physical Therapy Symposium. Facilitating the active involvement of other faculty in the program; developing strategies to recruit, retain and promote a diverse staff that represents the population being served in Oregon and beyond. Providing culturally-competent and inclusive direct inpatient and outpatient care, at the OHSU Hospital and at other OHSU Family Medicine-approved clinical practice sites, under the supervision of OHSU Family Medicine (current or significant past experience with obstetrical care is required). The Appointee will also serve as the Director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship (0.2FTE, see that Position Description). (0.20 FTE) As Sports Medicine Fellowship Director, this person will oversee all aspects of the OHSU Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship program and ensure compliance with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, American Board of Family Medicine, OHSU standards, policies, and procedures. Oversee all aspects of the OHSU Primary care Sports Medicine Fellowship program which conforms to accreditation guidelines as outlined by the American Board of Family Medicine, the Review Committee for Sports Medicine of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and OHSU office of GME. Demonstrate OHSU’s strong commitment to diversity in medical education, including in race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, cultural background, disability status, and learning style. Specific administration roles include but are not limited to: Oversee fellowship didactic curriculum development – including control of content and the necessary steps to assess fellows’ sports medicine competencies. Oversee Sports Ultrasound curriculum; Ensure fellows have adequate didactic/procedural training – for diagnostic and interventional sports ultrasound. Recruit fellow applicants thru ERAS/NRMP. Ensure compliance with the National Fellowship Match. Oversee all aspects of the fellow’s clinical experiences – schedules and faculty recruitment and evaluations. Ensure the fellows have adequate experiences in sports medicine including training rooms, sideline coverage and mass participation coverage Oversee development of AIRE fellowship either directly or indirectly via a designee in coordination with the OHSU Portland Family Medicine Residency Program. Mentor Associate Fellowship Director(s) and Sports Faculty involved with the fellowship including facilitating group work in scholarship, grantsmanship, curriculum development and dissemination. Facilitate the active involvement of other faculty in the fellowship; develop strategies to recruit, retain and promote a diverse staff that represents the population being served in Oregon and beyond. Collaborate with other Educational leaders to best leverage DFMs educational resources including OHSU Family Medicine Residency Director (whose program serves as the Parent program for the fellowship). Provide culturally-competent and inclusive direct inpatient and outpatient care, at the OHSU University Hospital and at other OHSU Family Medicine-approved clinical practice sites, under the supervision of OHSU Family Medicine (current or significant past experience with obstetrical care is desired). Other important duties include: Participate in departmental teaching of residents, students and faculty. Participate in primary care research and other scholarly activities. Participate in OHSU institutional committees. Provide leadership and guidance to others for their scholarly work in family medicine. The Appointee will also serve as the Medical Director of the Sports Medicine Clinical Program (see that Position Description). (0.60 FTE) Sports Medicine/Family Medicine Faculty Clinical/Administrative Provide full spectrum family medicine care. Work collaboratively with full and part time faculty to maintain an active practice. The Appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service. The faculty member will be expected to have a strong commitment to developing the practice into a vibrant clinical and academic operation, which is successful from both a professional and business point of view. The faculty member will be expected to participate in continuing education, professional and faculty development and scholarship. Previous work experience in primary care is required. The Appointee will directly see patients in their clinic 4.8 half days per week and have 1.2 half days available for administrative duties/scholarship duties. Expectations for number of patients seen per half day will be commensurate with that of other faculty and with minimum target numbers of 8-10 visits per half day depending on complexity of the patient population. The Appointee will also receive 2.3 hours per week for scholarship, and will receive 2.3 hours per week for a combination of teaching and completion of administrative tasks Involvement with didactic and clinical supervision of fellows in the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship and Family Medicine Residency at OHSU Family Medicine. The Appointee will be involved in the community in the role of team physician Inpatient (medicine/pediatric) service and obstetrical care are optional, not required. The faculty member will have a strong commitment to developing the family and sports medicine practice into a vibrant, successful clinical and academic operation The faculty member will participate in continuing education, professional and faculty development, and scholarship as directed by the Department of Family Medicine All faculty members take an active role in the committee structure of the School of Medicine, attend faculty meetings, and participate in faculty and professional development programs The Appointee will be expected to document using the electronic health record and maintain complete and timely patient care documentation consistent with OHSU and Family Medicine policies and procedures. By mutual agreement between the Department and the physician, this position may include Inpatient Care (at OHSU and/or HMC) with call duties being shared with the faculty inpatient call group.
