Provides direct patient care by applying or removing casts/splints and durable medical equipment. Assists the physician with invasive procedures. Assist with the reduction of fractures and dislocations. Assists with pain assessment of patients. Administers medications per physician instructions. Utilizes the nursing process to assess and assist physician to evaluate patient care, including determining medical diagnoses, therapeutic plans, interventions and procedures. Collaborates with physician in managing acute and long-term medical needs of patients. Performs focused patient interviews to identify patient needs; including orthopaedic history and partial physical exam. Responds to patient’s questions by consulting with physician and assisting in management of medical and surgical concerns and emergencies under physician supervision. Provide consultation based on physician’s input. Generates prescription orders, laboratory orders and diagnostic procedures according to physician’s instructions. Initiates and evaluates patient and/or family education in the areas of orthopaedic equipment and medical supplies, crutches, canes, braces and durable medical equipment. Provides pre and post-operative instructions to patients and families. Advises patients regarding health and illness prevention and recommends community resources to meet patient and family needs. Orders surgical equipment and hardware for specific procedures. Communicates physician’s verbal orders to other providers.
