HNELHD STAFF SPECIALIST IN GENERAL SURGERY - ARMIDALE RURAL REFERRAL HOSPITAL

The Surgical Unit of Armidale Rural Referral Hospital is seeking to appoint a Staff Specialist in General Surgery to its expanding Department. Surgical services include general, orthopaedics, gynaecology, urology and ophthalmology. The hospital is a spacious, modern and well-equipped with the most recent development opening in 2019. You will join an experienced team of General Surgeons well supported by a junior team comprising of 3 Registrars and 1 Resident Medical Officer. You will provide services for Armidale Rural Referral Hospital and outreach services to surrounding District Hospitals. The on-call roster is 1:4 with optionality for private practice with Armidale Private Hospital.
An appointment with Armidale Hospital offers a challenging career that is richly rewarding, complemented by ample opportunity for leisure time that is family centred. A dynamic management team and broader rural and regional networks provides a supportive working environment. Armidale Hospital is a ninety-nine-bed facility providing a comprehensive range of services including acute medical and surgical services, obstetrics, paediatrics and a range of diagnostic and allied health services. A busy emergency department, a Level 3 Close Observation Unit, mental health unit and renal dialysis unit. The referral community of the area is 55,200. Adult Medical services include respiratory, cardiac, chemotherapy, renal and palliative care.
A clinical appointment with Armidale offers a great opportunity for those interested and teaching the next generation of medical officers. The Tablelands Clinical School is part of the UON and UNE Joint Medical Program. Medical students undertake clinical placements and attend teaching at the clinical school which is exceptionally well resourced with simulation laboratories and tutorial rooms.
Armidale is set high on the picturesque Northern Tablelands and is known for its beautiful tree lined streets and magnificent autumn colours and has a distinctive seasonal climate. Armidale is located midway between Sydney and Brisbane on the New England Highway with an abundance of transport options between the major cities. The region offers diversity in outdoor activities such as bushwalking in the nearby World Heritage listed National Parks offering spectacular gorges and waterfalls in Australia. Armidale is an educational centre featuring a university, as well as public and private schools, and a regional conservatorium each providing a level of education comparable to any capital city in Australia.

Mandatory requirements of this role include:

  • Admitting, consultative, diagnostic, procedural, outpatient, telehealth and on-call services as determined and required by HNELHD
  • Attendance and availability during rostered work hours and whilst on-call including clinical handover, clinical supervision, teaching and for emergency and routine care as determined and required by HNELHD.
  • Provision of education and research as determined and required by HNELHD
  • A primary medical degree registrable with AHPRA and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (General Surgery) and/or overseas trained specialist pathways.
  • Demonstrated current and senior level leadership experience in the field of General Surgery.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and evaluate models of service delivery, coordinate services, allocate resources, negotiate with stakeholders and monitor service delivery to ensure that services are delivered in alignment with organisational goals.
  • Demonstrate the capability to teach and train effectively at all levels of undergraduate and postgraduate education and where required lead the department through successful accreditation.
  • Evidence of being a highly skilled communicator, including both oral and written skills, communicating with colleagues, management, patients, students, other health professionals and the public.
  • Evidence of being a high-level collaborator, including the ability to network and operate within an interdisciplinary framework and to work with other stakeholders in a variety of settings.
  • Evidence of being a leader, including ability to be flexible and cope with a changing health system, past leadership and management experience and previous safety and quality improvement activities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to clinical governance with detailed knowledge of, and experience in governance and clinical risk management principles and practices to achieve goals of the organisation
