Responsibilities

ROLE PURPOSE

BCP Council is seeking an Apprentice Public Health Analyst to join its Public Health and Communities team. This role supports the development of a dedicated public health function focused on:

  • Promoting community well-being
  • Tackling health inequalities, and
  • Improving health outcomes across Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole

The position has been created following the recent decision to separate the pan-Dorset shared public health service, establishing distinct public health functions for BCP Council and Dorset Council.
We are looking for a proactive and enthusiastic team member who is passionate about public health and eager to contribute to the delivery of effective services. This is an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact across Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole. As an Apprentice Public Health Analyst, you will play a key role in shaping the council’s approach to public health and place-based services. Working collaboratively with communities and partners, you’ll help drive improvements that truly benefit residents. Your work will be pivotal in placing intelligence and analytics at the core of decision-making, supporting public health and community services and enhancing health and well-being.
BCP Council has a bold vision of building sustainable, safe, and healthy communities where people, nature, the coast, and our towns thrive together in harmony. As the tenth largest urban local authority in England, we serve vibrant and diverse communities that are central to everything we do. Our corporate priorities are guided by a strong commitment to putting people first.
The Public Health function at BCP Council is centered on the communities that make up the Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole area. Our focus is on building capability and independence within communities, reducing health inequalities, improving health outcomes for children and young people, and creating healthy environments. We take a community-centered approach to health and wellbeing, ensuring that local voices shape the services and support we provide.
The BCP Public Health & Communities team is based at the Civic Centre in Bournemouth, and we actively support agile and hybrid working through the use of online technology. Flexible working arrangements are also supported where possible. There is an expectation to work within the BCP area to build strong relationships with colleagues and partners, and team members are required to attend in-person meetings at least once a week.
This Level 7 Master’s degree apprenticeship is ideal for early-career professionals who are passionate about using data and analytics to understand population health needs and inform evidence-based decision-making.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

While undertaking the 36-month Health Care Intelligence Specialist Level 7 Apprenticeship with training provider JGA Group, you will play a key role in supporting public health intelligence across the BCP area and pan-Dorset partnership working. Your work will contribute to evidence-based decision-making and service improvement through a range of responsibilities, including:

  • Assessing population health needs, reviewing and generating evidence to inform strategy and planning
  • Supporting service evaluation and promoting best practice in data collection, analysis, and use
  • Providing professional statistical advice, translating complex data into clear insights for non-technical audiences
  • Designing and delivering reporting solutions using our data warehouse and Power BI, applying the latest innovations to generate actionable insights
  • Contributing to the development and maintenance of the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) and other health needs assessments
  • Enhancing analytical capacity within BCP Council by supporting training, knowledge sharing, and the dissemination of intelligence

When you’re not engaged in formal learning with JGA Group, you’ll be gaining hands-on experience as part of the Public Health Intelligence team at BCP Council. This on-the-job learning will allow you to apply your academic knowledge in a real-world setting, contributing to meaningful public health work.
