Job Description:
Job Title: 3rd Shift - Public Safety Officer
Status: Non-Exempt Full-time 12 month position
Wage Grade: 720
Reports To: Augustana Chief of Police & Public Safety
Overview: Under direct supervision, performs a variety of duties and task relating to the health and safety of persons and property at Augustana College. Patrols the campus at designated times and areas, following established procedures for handling a wide variety of situations. Work hours typically include weekends and holiday hours on a scheduled basis.

Job Duties:

  • Patrols College property at designated times and location on both foot and by vehicle making periodic inspections of building and grounds. During patrol, identifies suspicious situations, investigates, and acts to prevents problems.
  • Uses patrol time to protect College property and equipment against fire, theft, damage, illegal entry, or other threats. Reports unsafe conditions or practices to appropriate leaders for handling. Follows-up to ensure resolution as requested.
  • Responds to medical, fire, and personnel emergencies involving visitors and/or members of the College community including students, faculty, staff and administrators.
  • As necessary, involves additional resources and/or members of the campus community to make decisions and/or proactively communicate possible issues and situations. Communicates with Public Safety, College Administration, local police and fire departments, and others as needed.
  • Directs traffic and performs event control when needed. Balances the needs of the College with the needs of events and participants, ensuring a safe experience for all.
  • Assists and directs campus visitors. Provide guidance and general information to promote the overall positive culture of the campus. Provides assistance to campus members with lock-out vehicle issues upon request.
  • Prepares and submits written reports of activities as well as other administrative tasks as directed. Provides sufficient detail to allow for good decision-making by other involved parties.
  • Works collaboratively with all members of the Public Safety department to accomplish the department’s and college’s objectives.
  • Attends training, additional education, department meetings, and participates as needed in administrative and judicial hearings.
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:
Education:
High school diploma or GED is required. Additional education, particularly in the areas of law enforcement is preferred.

Experience & Skills:

  • 0-3 of related experience in public or private sector security and/or law enforcement. While experience is not required it is greatly preferred.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of personalities and maintain a balance of service orientation and compliance with Campus regulations.
  • Must be able to report to work on a reliable basis.
  • Strong detail orientation
  • Ability to quickly assess a situation and determine an appropriate response.
  • Ability to follow established procedures and communicate with a diverse population.
  • Basic computer skills

Travel: Extensive on-campus travel, little to no off-campus travel.
Physical Requirements: This position requires good physical condition with the ability to walk for long periods, climb stairs, work in an outdoor environment, and lift up to 50 pounds on a periodic basis. Must be able to perform duties in extreme weather conditions. Also required is the ability to listen, hear, speak, read, bend, stoop, and stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to use a computer to accomplish a variety of job tasks.
Special Requirements: As key personnel representing the College to the campus and public this position requires excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to relate to a diverse campus population, and the ability and willingness to model the mission and high standard of behavior of Augustana College. Public Safety Officers must possess, or be able to obtain, a valid driver’s license. Successful candidates must pass a criminal background check.
Additional Information:
The current opening is for 3rd Shift which includes regular hours of 11pm-7am.
