SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Proven excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills including, active listening skills and demonstrated ability to adapt communication style and approach to the level of the audience.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including the ability to build rapport, trusting professional relationships in short periods of time with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities.
  • Demonstrated effective time and priority management skills with the ability to manage competing deadlines and stakeholders, accurately assess risk and urgency and to maintain knowledge of all tasks with repeated interruptions.
  • Proven self-awareness, reflective skills and tools to manage personal well-being when supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander vulnerable families including knowing when to reach out for assistance
  • Demonstrated willingness for continuous learning being a proven self-starter, self-reflective approach to your work, and embracing feedback
  • A current driver’s licence and eligibility for a Blue Card/NDIS Workers Screening Card

Responsibilities:

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Benevolent Society is a Partner in the Community for the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and are adding additional Child Development Specialists to our growing Early Childhood Approach (ECA) team.
You will work in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and early childhood services to gather information on their child’s development. You will support these families to develop, understand and implement their child’s NDIS plans.
As an evolving scheme, the NDIS environment can be dynamic and fast-paced, if you are open and excited by change and love being part of creating and working through the best approach, come join us and be part of making a difference through these changes.
You will meet with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families virtually, over the phone or face to face, to gather information on their child’s development and current supports. You will work in partnership with these families to develop goals, with a focus on participant and engagement across their child’s natural environments to promote meaningful change.

DUTIES

  • Meeting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, caregivers and other key stakeholders in natural settings to gather information about the daily functional impacts of a child’s development or disability through a strengths-based approach.
  • Documenting information on an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child’s development or disability to provide recommendations for supports including referrals to mainstream/ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community services and potential funded supports through the NDIS.
  • Building the capacity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous caregivers to meet their child’s individual goals through providing information and education relating to early childhood development.
