The Tanenbaum Open Science Institute (TOSI) has been created in 2016 to drive an Open Science paradigm shift in Neuroscience, in Canada and beyond. TOSI’s dual mission is to foster a national alliance of Open Science institutes in Canada, and enhance full implementation of Open Science Guiding Principles within The Neuro, the first research, healthcare, and teaching institute in the world to fully embrace Open Science at the institutional level.
Reporting to TOSI’s Chief Executive Officer, the Academic Associate will lead all activities related to the creation of a nation-wide alliance of Open Science institutes in neuroscience. He or she will guide various academic institutions through their adoption of Open Science policy and practices, build robust collaborations with these various partners, and act as the TOSI liaison person across Canada.

Specific duties include:

  • In collaboration with the TOSI executives, define and implement the strategic objectives aiming to shift scientific practices toward an Open Science model, at The Neuro and across Canadian neuroscience institutes.
  • Generate, maintain and implement a collaborative framework and policy/procedure documents for the national Open Science alliance based on the principles of Open Science (including MOUs) and coordinate multi-centric research initiatives.
  • Finalize discussions engaged with collaborators in the neuroscience field in Canada, and translate these into concrete scientific collaboration agreements.
  • Ensure knowledge transfer activities with academic partners in the implementation of Open Science by spending time locally to understand the institutional research culture, share best practices and lessons learned from The Neuro.
  • Contribute to or lead publication of scientific articles and position papers on the implementation of OS practices and any other OS-related subjects.
  • Identify and pursue financing opportunities in partnership with government, academic and corporate entities, including proposal preparation and grant writing.
  • Contribute to the development of educational material or networking events aimed at raising awareness of Open Science practice at The Neuro and beyond.
  • Lead the development of methods to measure and track changes in scientific practices across partner institutions.
  • Plan and coordinate scientific gatherings including existing and potential new TOSI partners.
  • Provide timely reporting to the TOSI Executive committee, to founders and funders.
  • Be responsible for overall budget management of the TOSI National Incentive Fund and funding allocation.

Education/Experience
The successful candidate must hold a PhD degree in neuroscience or a related discipline. The candidate must have a demonstrated knowledge of scientific research and of the national and global Open Science landscape.
The candidate must have demonstrated superior organizational, planning, priority settings, analyzing and problem-solving skills. The ability to communicate in scientific and nonscientific settings and build cooperative, interactive and effective interpersonal relationships is required. The ideal candidate must have demonstrated the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to manage multiple projects within established deadlines. The candidate must be able to work autonomously and as part of a team. We require fluency in both English and French, spoken and written.
