Position summary
The Department of Medicine and the Division of Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute is looking for a full-time academic cardiologist with specialization in electrophysiology.
The successful applicant would join a group of 46 cardiologists at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI). The UOHI is a large tertiary centre providing cardiovascular care to Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. The UOHI is Canada’s largest and foremost heart health centre. It employs over 1,400 physicians, nurses, researchers, technicians, allied health professionals and more. The Institute handles more than 235,000 patients yearly from across Canada.
In addition to state-of-the-art catheterization (4) and electrophysiology (4) labs, a dedicated cardiac imaging facility with PET, MRI, CT, SPECT and echocardiography imaging, core facilities also include 96 in-patient ward beds, an intensive cardiac care unit (ICCU) with 14 beds, an intensive cardiac surgery unit (CSICU) with 27 beds, a Day Unit with 36 beds, a Reference Centre with 11 beds, and a Structural Procedure Unit of 6 beds.
The Division is renowned for delivery of outstanding cardiac care and excellence in education at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels (recognized as a leading training program in Canada and internationally). It is also recognized internationally for its research in electrophysiology, cardiac imaging, STEMI/ACS coronary intervention, valvular disease, cardiac transplantation and pulmonary hypertension programs, as well as for its strength in heart failure and structural interventions.
Responsibilities
The successful applicant would join a group of nine cardiac electrophysiologists which makes up the arrhythmia service at The UOHI. The team performs over 1,500 ablations and 1,500 device implants per year in 4 state-of-the-art electrophysiology labs.
The applicant, based on their career track, would be expected to provide in-patient ward service, participate in out-patient clinics, work in our electrophysiology labs and device clinic, and participate in teaching and research.
Qualifications
Candidates must hold the FRCPC in Internal Medicine with subsequent certification in Cardiology or equivalent specialty certification, be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association, and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario. Candidates should have a significant academic profile, with a demonstrated track record of high-quality research. International candidates will be eligible for clinical licensing via the College of Physicians of Ontario Academic licensing pathway (no examination requirements).
Academic appointment ranking is determined by the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa, based on qualifications and experience. However, we are targeting applications from those who qualify for Associate Professor or above. International candidates will be eligible for clinical licensing via the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario Academic licensing pathway (no examination requirements).
The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.

The Ottawa Hospital is a 1,150 bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four in-patient sites (Civic, General, UOHI, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). There are approximately 50,000 in-patient admissions, 160,000 emergency visits, and over one million out-patient visits annually.
The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) is The Ottawa Hospital’s research arm. Terms of employment
The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources, including, but not limited to, clinical billings (fee-for-service), salary support (AFP), as well as honorariums/stipends. The salary range is $500,000 to $600,000. Health and welfare benefits, including extended health, dental, and disability and life insurance, are offered to full-time physicians.
