The Department of Clinical Research (DCR) is an academic center and umbrella organization supporting clinical researchers at the University of Bern and the University Hospitals consisting of strong Research Unit, the Clinical Trial Unit (CTU), the Clinical Investigation Unit (CIU), and two new subunits in 2024/5, a Medical Data Science Unit and a Gender Medicine Unit.
DCR is a diverse department that provides central organization for expertise, innovation, leadership, contemporary pedagogy, and centralized facilities for supporting clinical researchers. DCR offers clinical researchers full support from study design to study implementation. DCR works across multiple collaborations with the Medical Faculty of the University of Bern and the University Hospitals.
We are looking for an Academic Lead for Clinical Trials at the DCR to start in Q4 2024 or Q1 2025.
Tasks
- Lead and co-lead the design and conduct of clinical trials and clinical research in collaboration with Principal Investigators and Head of DCR.
- Responsible for the academic performance and delivery of the DCR divisions of statistics and methodology, study management and monitoring and data management
- Conduct own research, fostering collaborations with other DCR professors.
- Academic performance in line with the standards (initially Associate Professor) of the University of Bern. This includes grant acquisition, high-impact publications, presentations, and leadership roles in national and international research community.
- Define and implement new services and research agendas for the DCR divisions, contributing to the overall strategy, potentially as part of the DCR Senior Leadership Team.
- Represent the oversighted DCR divisions internally and externally
- Work closely with the DCR Business Operations to ensure effective financial planning, staffing, infrastructure development, and compliance with policies, ethical standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Engage with clinical researchers, DCR staff, University Hospitals Professors, and other researchers to increase the diversity and scope of projects within the DCR.
Requirements
- University degree in medicine or related health science field
- Second or postgraduate degree at PhD level or equivalent level in medical/biostatistics or relevant aspect of clinical trial development /conduct
- Habilitation or equivalent qualification.
- Strong experience in patient-oriented clinical research, including innovative study methods such as pragmatic trials.
- Extensive knowledge of applicable Swiss regulations, and Good Clinical Practice (at least 10 years)
- Experience in the design, implementation, conduct and analysis of interventional and observational clinical studies, particularly the use of novel methodologies
- Academic track record in clinical research, including peer-reviewed grants
- Leadership and management experience and formal or informal leadership training with the intention to undertake formal training
- Fluent in English
