DESCRIPTION
Location: This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person at the Zeidlor Ledcor Centre.
The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology in partnership with Alberta Health Services and Covenant Health, invites applications for a translational scientist to be based at the Centre of Excellence for Gastrointestinal Inflammation and Immunity Research (CEGIIR) at the University of Alberta. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions. The University is currently home to more than 38,000 students with more than 15,000 faculty and staff.
The Division of Gastroenterology in the Department of Medicine is one of the largest Gastroenterology and Hepatology centers in Canada with 27 academic physicians and 2 tenured non-clinical faculty members. Its leading-edge research program is supported by more than $3 M annual research funding, its Centre of Excellence in Gastrointestinal Inflammation and Immunity Research, with 45 research trainees. The Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Alberta Hospital is a major clinical referral centre for Northern and Central Alberta and its adjoining Provinces and Territories. State-of-the-art clinical care is delivered through a modern therapeutic endoscopy facility, a large subspecialty in-patient unit and a modern ambulatory care centre. Specialized multidisciplinary programs for patients with chronic liver disease, liver transplantation and inflammatory bowel disease provide comprehensive ongoing care, and advanced therapeutic endoscopy, enteral and parenteral nutrition services as well as gastrointestinal motility testing services are provided by division members. The Division’s large education portfolio includes all levels of medical education as well as learning programs for allied health professions.
The Division of Gastroenterology currently has 54 MD members and is one of the largest gastroenterology, hepatology, endoscopy, motility and nutrition centers in Canada. It manages leading-edge clinical, basic and translational research programs involving 45 graduate and undergraduate students; over 3 million dollars in basic and clinical research funding annually and has developed the Centres of Excellence for Gastrointestinal Inflammation and Immunity Research (CEGIIR) for basic research and a very busy Clinical and Translational Research Unit. As a major tertiary academic referral centre, the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Alberta Hospital has a highly specialized consultation and advanced therapeutic endoscopy facility conducting some 25,000 endoscopies annually, two state-of-the-art in-patient units, a first of its kind in Canada outpatient research and consultation clinic (Zeidler Ledcor Centre) staffed with highly skilled gastroenterologists, hepatologists, specialized nurses and scientists.
The successful candidate will be a PhD with experience in translational research. The candidate must have experience in collaborating with clinicians.

Key accountabilities of the Academic position in Gastroenterology will include but will not be limited to a record of grants and publications with an emphasis on the microbiome and its role in: host response to dietary fibres, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, mental health and neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis.
The successful candidate will be offered a contingent tenured or tenure-track appointment in the Department of Medicine, with the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor, which is in accordance with the University of Alberta Faculty Agreement, and offers a comprehensive benefits package.
