Reporting to the Director, Accessibility and Testing Services, the successful applicant will be responsible for supporting students with a variety of disabilities in Nursing and Allied Health Programs. This includes conducting intake interviews, case management and implementing appropriate procedures to support student success; determining appropriate academic accommodations, clinical accommodations for students in experiential learning placements, and working closely with faculty to address the needs of students as they arise; developing and implementing confidential academic accommodation plans; clinical accommodation placement support forms, and liaising with College administration, faculty and staff to ensure college policies and practices are consistent with the Ontario Human Rights Code and other relevant legislation; advocating within the College and beyond on a broad range of issues impacting students with disabilities including the promotion of universal design for learning on campus; and contributing to a positive, co-operative team environment.
The incumbent must be knowledgeable regarding appropriate post-secondary accommodations in healthcare settings, learning strategies, adaptive technologies, legislation which determines disability supports at the post-secondary level, and community resources, including school boards, community physicians, psychologists and other professionals.
Responsibilities:
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:
The duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
- Performing the duties for a designated caseload of students with various disabilities which may include mental health, medical, physical, sensory, and learning disabilities.
- Ensuring that the necessary documentation is on file to support the requested accommodations and maintaining confidential records of accommodation requests, actions taken, and the effectiveness of the accommodations and supports.
- Interpreting a variety of documentation including psycho-educational assessments.
- Planning, coordinating and developing interventions/academic accommodation plans and experiential learning accommodation plans for students in Nursing and Allied health care programs with a variety of disabilities.
- Consulting with faculty and other College stakeholders; serving as an advocate regarding disability needs of students, and supporting the College in meeting its legal obligations under the OHRC and AODA.
- Providing accessibility counselling, resources, and referrals to support transition to employment for students with disabilities.
- Collaborating, consulting and communicating with Counselling and Accessible Learning Services staff, Academic Schools, other College departments and services and external stakeholders including school boards, agencies etc.
Other duties as assigned.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE:
- Masters level degree in Nursing, Counselling, Social Work, Disability Studies, Education, Psychology, Occupational Therapy or a related field.
- A minimum of 3 years full-time experience in providing support and case management for students with disabilities in a post-secondary setting.
- This position will provide direct support to students in Health Science programs such as Nursing and Personal Support Worker, so preference will be given to candidates with Nursing experience and College of Nurses of Ontario registration.
- Demonstrated ability in providing assistance to adult learners in areas such as: stress management, learning strategies, time management and organizational skills.
- Knowledge of and experience supporting students with a range of disabilities, the provision of services, and disability accommodations at a post-secondary level.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation and guidelines governing the provision of services to students with disabilities in Ontario.
- Demonstrated ability in crisis intervention.
- Ability to assess and analyze psycho-educational assessments.
- Demonstrated understanding of the post-secondary environment and the ability to relate well to students, faculty and staff.
- Demonstrated commitment to the objective of empowerment, integration, inclusion and anti-oppressive practice.
- Proven ability to work cooperatively with others, and to work independently.
- Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
- Familiarity with the continuum of learning, academic programs and student services offered by Mohawk College is highly desirable
- Knowledge of employment resources and supports for students with disabilities.
- Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
- The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities.
