POSITION SUMMARY

The purpose of this position is to ensure that students with disabilities receive services and accommodations appropriate for their disabilities, in order to provide equal access to the university’s educational resources. The incumbent is the primary point of contact for a caseload that includes students authorized for alternative media accommodations.
Under the lead direction and supervision of the Assistant Director of Student Disability Services, the Accessible Technology Assistant Coordinator contributes to the daily functions of SDS’s Accessible Technology Center (ATC) by performing moderately complex professional student service work. The incumbent of this position manages alternative media, conducts alternative media intakes, advises students on their alternative media accommodations and performs the administrative tasks related to alternative media and accessible technology accommodations for students with disabilities as assigned by the Assistant Director. Ensuring access to accessible technology is not just a legal obligation but also a core aspect of Student Disability Services’ mission. Duties include assessing the need for authorizing alternative media accommodations, serving as an information resource for students, faculty and staff in matters related to alternative media and best practices.
The Accessible Technology Assistant Coordinator is also responsible for maintaining effective working relationships with a wide range of students, faculty and the general public and is expected to carry out their day-to-day assignments without immediate direction. The coordination of alternative media and accessible technology accommodations involves working with individuals at all levels of the organization, often in collaboration with the SDS accommodations counselors and administrative staff.
This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on June 30, 2025, with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated as exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY

Student Disability Services (SDS) in the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity provides a full range of accommodations and services to nearly 2,500 students with physical, psychological, and learning disabilities, facilitating equal access to the educational process. This is accomplished through direct service support, review of campus accessibility, adaptive technology, assessment, test accommodation, and a variety of other services. Accommodations vary according to types of disabilities, and may include sign language interpreting; provision of alternative formats, such as electronic text or Braille; computer-assisted real-time captioning; test accommodations; advising; assistive computer technology; cart transportation services, and numerous other services. Provision of these academic support services, technology and advocacy promotes the retention and graduation of students with disabilities at SDSU.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated competency using Google Workspace and Microsoft Office.
  • Familiarity with electronic text conversion tools and alternative media production processes.
  • Proficiency with assistive technology software and hardware, such as screen readers, alternative input devices, and speech recognition software.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate respectfully and professionally with students and faculty.
  • Understanding of, or ability to rapidly acquire understanding of, basic processes in alternative media production.
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities and a strong understanding of accessibility principles and best practices.
  • Work experience in disability services at the postsecondary level preferred.
  • Superior communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey complex technical information in a clear and accessible manner.
  • Certification in accessibility standards or assistive technology training.
