The City of Kelowna has an amazing opportunity for you! We are looking for an Accounting Assistant in our fun Revenue Branch of Financial Services at City Hall. Yes, accounting can be fun when working within this branch! The Revenue Branch provides internal and external customer service, handling property tax, utilities, parking, and transit. This position gives a great opportunity to expand skills like collaboration, helping people, looking beyond the transaction and continue to learn accounting.
Once here, you could expand your knowledge in different areas: accounts payable, accounts receivable, journal entries, reconciliations, analysis, payroll, project support and various other duties. The successful applicant will be flexible to handle a range of accounting activities and provide excellent customer service.
An Accounting Assistant prepares, processes and reconciles financial accounts, statements and records in support of financial reporting and accounting systems.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (ACCOUNTING ASSISTANT II)

Option 1

  • Minimum of one (1) year of relevant local government accounting experience.
  • Minimum of four (4) CPA PREP Modules (2 in Accounting or Finance) or equivalent.

Option 2

  • Minimum of three (3) years of relevant accounting experience.
  • Minimum of four (4) CPA PREP Modules (2 in Accounting or Finance) or equivalent.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (ACCOUNTING ASSISTANT I)

Option 1

  • Minimum of six (6) months relevant accounting experience.
  • Minimum of four (4) CPA PREP Modules (2 in Accounting or Finance) or equivalent.

Option 2

  • Minimum of one (1) year of relevant accounting experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) CPA PREP Modules (1 in accounting or Finance) or equivalent.

Option 3

  • Two (2) years of recent relevant accounting experience.
  • An Accounting Diploma from a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution.

Responsibilities:

DUTIES - UNION

  • Calculates and prepares summaries of various accounts related to departmental operations.
  • Ensures accuracy of financial transactions.
  • Prepares documentation for posting transactions and checks output for accuracy.
  • Applies payments on accounts.
  • Analyzes and reconciles accounts and records.
  • Acts as a prime point of contact for the public and internal staff on financial enquiries, payments and collections.
  • Participates on special project teams.
  • Performs system set-up and testing.
  • Provides peer training.
  • Processes and drafts invoices and work orders.
  • Participates in cross-training, organizes meetings and records minutes, and provides reception services.
  • Compiles and analyzes statistics, processes and drafts correspondence and reports.
