Description:
The Memorial University of Newfoundland Students’ Union (MUNSU) seeks a full-time Accounting Clerk to join our team. MUNSU represents more than 11,000 undergraduate students studying at the St. John’s campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland.
We are inviting applications for the full-time position. The successful applicant will be responsible for overseeing the general accounting duties at the MUN Students Union. Duties include processing accounts payable and receivable transactions, managing vendor communications, preparing & entering journal entries; student payroll as well as other related duties as required.
This position reports directly to the Executive of the Students’ Union.
Salary: Accounting Clerk, Step 1 ($30.30/hour) plus benefits (CUPE 4554 collective agreement).
Hours of Work: 8:30am-4:30p.m. Monday-Friday, 35 hours per week.
Start Date: Immediately
The Accounting Clerk plays a crucial role in supporting the financial operations of an organization.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Attention to Detail: High accuracy in data entry and record-keeping.
- Software Proficiency: Familiarity with accounting and banking software such as Sage, RBC Express and other related software.
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
- Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to identify and resolve discrepancies.
- Demonstrated strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work both collaboratively and with a high degree of independence and initiative.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Education: Post secondary education in business administration/accounting.
- Experience: 3-5 years experience in an accounting environment.
- Familiarity with the structures and operations of a students’ union.
- CPA certification is desired.

Responsibilities:
- Journal Entries: Prepare and post recurring journal entries to ensure accurate accounting records.
- Accounts Payable & Receivable Processing: Manage accounts payable invoices, sort and distribute incoming invoices for approval, and ensure timely payment processing.
- Payroll processing, Tax preparation and other CRA requests.
- Record Keeping: Receiving and recording daily deposits, vendor payments, cash, and cheques.
- Reporting: Producing financial reports as requested.
- Assist with annual audits and operating budgets.
- Accuracy Checks: Ensuring the accuracy of reports, figures, and postings.
- Reconciliation: Reconciling and reporting any discrepancies found in the records.
- Filing System: Maintaining a financial filing system.
