Job Description:
The Lucasfilm Film Archives is a premier collection that houses Lucasfilm’s historical production elements, dating back to the company’s inception. The Archive is responsible for preserving over 200,000 film, audio, video, data, and non-AV assets. As part of the Archives team, the Archives Assistant will play a key role in managing and preserving the company’s legacy media for future production and franchise use.
The Archives Assistant will provide operational support to the Film Archives department, primarily focusing on collection management, media handling, and general archival practices. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work closely with both physical and digital assets, helping to maintain the integrity of the collection while supporting broader preservation and digitization initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  • Process, identify, inspect, inventory, and catalog archival materials, including film, video, documents, and still images.
  • Perform archival film handling tasks such as film inspection, identification of motion picture film elements, repair, and preparation for scanning.
  • Assist in the rehousing of physical media and assign storage locations for optimal preservation.
  • Support the preservation, digitization planning, and collection management efforts in collaboration with the department’s goals.
  • Conduct collection research using in-house databases and external sources to enhance cataloging accuracy.
  • Scan documents, manage digital files, and refine metadata within the Film Archives department’s digital asset management system.
  • Collaborate with the Image Archive to inventory and rehouse still image collections, ensuring materials are properly stored and accessible.
  • Attend regular archive check-in meetings, coordinating with the Asset teams and providing updates on collection progress and initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail, particularly in managing physical and digital assets.
  • Familiarity with archival practices, including handling and preserving historical media, such as film, video, and documents.
  • Experience with digital asset management systems and metadata entry.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, supporting preservation and digitization efforts.
  • Experience with film inspection, repair, and preparation for digitization is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with different departments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in a film archive, library, or museum setting.
  • Knowledge of motion picture film elements and related preservation techniques.
  • Familiarity with the Lucasfilm franchise or similar media production environments.
