JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director of Resident Care, the Behaviour Support Specialist is responsible for providing a safe, resident focused comprehensive Behavioural Support Program in the specialized dementia behavioural care units while ensuring compliance with Ministry of Long Term Care (MLTC) Legislation and Regulations, Ontario Health West funding requirements and organizational expectations. The T. Roy Adams Regional Centre for Dementia Care specializes in enhancing the lives of older adults living with dementia and behavioural changes. This role is crucial in ensuring the well-being and quality of life for residents who may exhibit challenging behaviours.

EDUCATION

  • Post-secondary degree in Nursing, Social Work, or other health related discipline
  • Registration with a relevant regulatory body
  • Experience in leading a Behaviour Support Unit (BSU) is preferred

KNOWLEDGE

  • At least 3 years of current related experience in a Long-Term Care Home
  • At least 3 years of current related experience working with individuals with cognitive impairment and or challenging behaviours
  • Strong understanding of positive behaviour support principles and de-escalation techniques
  • 3 years’ experience working with residents with dementia or residents requiring behavioural support
  • Certification in Dementia Care (or equivalent certificate course) from a recognized Community College
  • PIECES training (within last 2 years)
  • Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) to Care
  • GPA Coach certificate
  • Positive Approach to Care (PAC) trained
  • Dementiability certification preferred
  • Knowledge of electronic documentation software
  • Knowledge of Fixing-Long-Term Care Act and regulations

ENSURES EFFECTIVE PROCESSES, POLICIES AND PRACTICES ARE IN PLACE AND SUPPORT REGULATORY STANDARDS, REQUIREMENTS, MONITORING COMPLIANCE AND ADDRESSING ISSUES. (20% OF TIME)

  • Develops, audits, and revises policy and procedure manuals for the Specialized Units.
  • Ensures policies and procedures are established, implemented, revised, and adhered to for the Specialized Units.
  • Develops and implements systems and processes that ensure compliance with all elements of the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, Regulations Under the Act and other relevant legislation.
  • Maintains an active presence in the home to ensure the safety and quality of service provision, adherence to policies and procedures, and the effectiveness of systems and processes.
  • Implements risk management related activities for all department to optimize resident safety and mitigate risk related to training, physical plant, equipment, systems and processes, regulations and legislation.
  • Ensures compliance in clinical documentation and care planning procedures and various applicable college standards. (Eg. College of Nurses, College of Physicians)

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • In accordance with the Corporate Criminal Record Check Policy, the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Criminal Records Check and submit a Canadian Police Clearance Certificate for the vulnerable sector.
  • This position requires the incumbent to undergo and pass a Tuberculosis screen as required by the corporation.
  • This position must maintain the ability to travel in a timely manner to other offices, work locations, or sites as authorized by the Corporation for business travel.
