Rotating Shifts: 0700-1900, 1900-0700
Pay Band: Band-L $29.86-$33.09

Location: Detoxification Centre – 240 Brock Street
In accordance with Article 9.05, where the previous incumbent returns to this position within the thirty (30) day trial period this position shall be deemed not vacant and the posting will be cancelled. Should the vacancy be cancelled, applicants to this posting shall be notified.

However, this does not guarantee the permanence of the shift time or work assignment for the position. The Hospital reserves its Management Rights under the CUPE Collective Agreement to make changes to shift time and work assignment as it deems necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 2-year diploma/certificate in the social services field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- BCLS Certificate at the Health Care Provider level.
- Practical experience in the field of social services.
- Possess the skill and confidence to deal with persons in crisis situations.
- Possess the ability to maintain client and statistical data and to participate in research and other projects related to the development of programs for individuals with serious drug/alcohol related problems.
- Must demonstrate individual and group counselling skills.
- Current knowledge of the addictions field.
- Current knowledge of substance withdrawal, mental health, and pharmacology.
- Successful completion of recognized non-violent crisis intervention program within previous 2 years.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proven good attendance record.
- Proven ability to attend work regularly.
- Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.

Responsibilities:
- Ensure admission and discharge procedures, including search of clothing/belongings, are carried out according to established procedures and policies.
- Be alert to serious physical or mental health problems and, where appropriate, refer resident to the Urgent Care Clinic of Hotel Dieu Hospital or Kingston General Hospital Emergency Department. Staff may accompany a resident to the hospital only if there are two (2) other Detox Workers, or one Detox Worker and the Supervisor or a security officer, remaining in the Centre.
- Interview all residents, to provide supportive counselling, to motivate residents to accepting referrals to ongoing community supports and to make appropriate referrals.
- Control and monitor entry of residents and visitors to the Centre.
- Conduct house checks every hour during the day, and conduct bed checks every thirty (30) minutes in order to detect seizures, hallucinations, etc. and to monitor the quality of sleep (from 0000-0630).
- Report resident disciplinary problems to the Supervisor.
- Ensure all documentation is complete.
- Ensure all data entry is complete.
- Document resident’s progress in the resident file at least once each shift in order to maintain continuity and consistency of care between shifts.
- Keep all documentation, including client flow sheets and resident cards, up to date throughout shift.
- Ensure that meals are prepared according to pre-planned menus.
- Ensure that housekeeping activities are carried out and to check that these have been properly completed when done by residents.
- Report to Supervisor any problems with unit appliances.
- Identify problems in occupational, health or fire safety and report these to the Supervisor.
- Have a good working knowledge of all Detox policies and procedures
- Participate in any staff training recommended by the Supervisor.
- Help develop a spirit of cooperation conducive to effective team work.
- Perform such other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Supervisor or Program Manager.
