JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Director of Outreach and Student Recruitment, the Outreach Counselor is responsible for coordinating recruitment efforts within an assigned territory. This role focuses on promoting Cal State San Bernardino by providing information on admission criteria, tuition, financial aid, academic programs, and student support services with prospective high school and community college students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
  • Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned.
  • General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.
  • General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.
  • Obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews.
  • Reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data.
  • Advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required.
  • Recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi‑aged value systems and work accordingly.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a member of the outreach and recruitment team, fostering effective working relationships with diverse groups, including students, faculty, and the general public. Represent the university to prospective students.
  • Independently handle recruitment activities within an assigned territory, maintaining direct communication and follow-ups with the designated group.
  • Collect, analyze, and evaluate data to concisely report on recruitment efforts related to the assigned territory.
  • Deliver outreach services through verbal presentations, application workshops, and informational booths at college events to support students in pursuing their educational and career goals in relation to their aptitudes, interests and abilities.
  • Travel to schools and outreach events within the assigned regions and the immediate service area.
  • Achieve application objectives for designated schools/regions to meet enrollment targets.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships through ongoing communication with prospective students via phone, email, and in-person.
  • Participate in on-campus and off-campus recruitment initiatives, including events such as Preview Day, Choose CSUSB, Coyote First Look, and Counselor Conferences, occasionally during evenings and weekends.
  • Assist with developing action plans and activities aimed at recruiting first-time freshmen and transfer students, including domestic travel and correspondence.
  • Promote CSUSB programs through clear and concise presentations and meetings with high schools, local community colleges, and community partners.
  • Understand the university’s policies and procedures for admissions and enrollment processes to connect prospective students with student support services.
  • Utilize counseling techniques and best practices to provide walk-in pre-admission counseling and advising for high school and community college transfer students, including assistance with application reviews, filing, and interpreting course equivalencies.
  • Refer prospective students and their families to on-campus academic and student services as needed.
  • Assist with daily outreach operations, including pre-admissions appointment duties, student advising, and campus tours presentation coverage.
  • Maintain communication with prospective students, applicants, and admits through the Communications Relations Management tool, Element 451.
  • Maintain professional relationships with school and community contacts.
  • Apply both knowledge and judgment in using principles, techniques, and standards toward day-to-day activities.
  • Follow up with students through email and phone call campaigns.
  • Conduct thorough in-person, email, phone, and virtual pre-admissions advising sessions for prospective students.
  • Assist in evaluating educational credentials and ensuring compliance with California State University and CSUSB guidelines for applicants, working closely with the Admissions Office to maintain accurate and up-to-date records.
  • Work with campus departments to facilitate the transition to matriculation and promote campus engagement.
  • Use initiative and resourcefulness to assist in implementing improvements for outreach events, including but not limited to special campus outreach events, CSUSB Instant Admit Days, Preview Day, Coyote First Look, Choose CSUSB (on campus and at community colleges and high schools), yield receptions, pre-admission sessions, admitted student on-site events, and campus tours.
  • Produce end-of-term reports on outreach events and activities, documenting synopsis of recruitment efforts, attendance, outcomes met, and recommendations for the future.
  • Attending training and professional development conferences and meetings, as needed.
  • Other classification related duties as assigned
