The Public Guardian and Trustee of Saskatchewan requires a highly motivated, energetic, and committed individual to assume the role of Trust Officer in the Adult Services unit. This unit is responsible for administering the financial and property affairs of dependent adults, locating beneficiaries, and releasing the estate of these adults upon their death.

Using your working knowledge of finance, administration, taxation, investment, accounting principles and experience in estate administration you will be responsible for:

  • Determining and securing client assets which may include real property, personal property, investments, life insurance and commodities such as grain and cattle.
  • Determining and, if appropriate, arranging for the payment and reduction of client debt and liabilities.
  • Ensuring all client income and applicable benefits are received and recorded.
  • Ensuring that real and personal property is insured and valued at appropriate amounts.
  • Ensuring that appropriate payments are processed from client accounts.
  • Arranging for the lease or sale of real property.
  • Arranging for the auction, sale, or disposal of personal property.
  • Making decisions and/or recommendations concerning client financial investments and other income earning assets.
  • Managing client financial affairs taking into consideration any taxation issues.
  • Assessing and ensuring that the client’s and their dependent’s financial needs are met.
  • Ensuring estate assets remain secured and insured until the estate has been released.
  • Locating and determining beneficiaries/heirs who may be entitled to the estate under the last Will and Testament and/or applicable law.
  • Basic estate administration which may include preparing schedules of assets and liabilities, obtaining heirship affidavits, releasing estate assets to lawyers, executors and/or family.
  • Directing assistant trust officers with respect to the files.

Our candidate of choice will have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills to develop effective working relationships with clients, their dependents, stakeholders, beneficiaries, lawyers, and the general public. The successful candidate must have excellent written and verbal skills with the ability to engage individuals who may be confused, resistant, and have mental health illnesses or addictions, including the ability to engage and calm individuals who may be grieving, angry or resistant.
Typically, the knowledge and skills required for this position would be obtained through a university degree in business administration or commerce, or a diploma from Saskatchewan Polytechnic in accountancy and relevant work experience that demonstrates problem-solving and analytical skills, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Skills in critical thinking and research are an asset.
Occasionally travel may be required to provide services to our clients located throughout the province.
