Description:
- Cutting edge role supporting our DSO transformation!
- Full medical, life and income protection insurance
- Potential to work a 9-day fortnight and the ability to purchase additional leave!
The electricity industry is facing a significant challenge due to decarbonisation and electrification. As part of WEL’s long term strategy to manage the energy trilemma of sustainability, resiliency and affordability, we have created a new role to support our transformation towards a DSO (Distribution System Operator) through reinforcing collaboration between field services and network management, and by integrating the latest field technologies with engineering design to accelerate our pace on network visibility and flexibility management.
We are looking for a special candidate who is dynamic in their thinking and keen to approach new ways of addressing challenges in the distribution industry. The successful candidate will be supported to develop this role themselves to enhance our current technologies.
The transition to a ‘Net Zero’ carbon emissions electricity system means that we must look at the technology of the future and how we prepare to capitalise on these new innovations. Net Zero Grid Pathways (NZGP) looks at the system-wide requirements and dependencies that will enable electrification through new generation to connect to the grid, accommodate both new and growing customer load bases, move power to where it’s needed, and continue to provide a secure and reliable power system.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
The successful candidate will be a Registered Electrician or Protection Technician equivalent with a good understanding of protection systems, communication systems, experience in operating and installing MV switchgear transformers, control and protection and other network related technologies.
Responsibilities:
- Work with our Asset Management team to design, build and operate the WEL smart metering mesh radio network, which is a real time dynamic self-healing system that provides network visibility for network planning, engineering design, operation and lifecycle management.
- Install DERs and IoT devices on the electricity network to enable non-network solutions to manage network capacity and supply quality issues using network flexibility.
- Work closely with the Asset Management team to verify the accuracy of the new data analytic outputs, undertake field investigations on network defects, connectivity issues and apply corrections.
As a technology futurist, you need two critical capabilities - firstly, to be able to understand the technology itself and secondly, to be able to translate that technology into real world impact in a way that everyone can understand.
