JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

Known internally as a Lead Systems Engineer, this a great opportunity to join our Aviation Power business during an exciting new program. This role is perfect for anyone looking to grow their career as a technical leader within an exciting industry. As a Lead Engineer in our Systems and Software team, you will be leading the Systems Verification Engineering team responsible for testing and troubleshooting an entirely new business jet electrical power distribution system within our Electrical Power Integration Centre (EPIC) – key to the development of safety-critical software for the system. Alongside senior engineers, you will be mentored and guided into a Lead Systems Engineer capable of delivering on both Safety of Flight and Certification verification activities over the next few years. You will be passionate about ensuring high-quality requirements, and relish architecting a design to meet those requirements that stand the test of time. You will have experience of verification & validation, and you will thrive on solving technical problems, in collaboration with other engineering functions.
You will be joining an inclusive and diverse team of experienced technical systems and software engineers who care about ensuring full lifecycle completeness and consistency. We are committed to improving our project execution through taking a lean and innovative approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement. We share technical knowledge and lessons learnt with others in the team, the department and across the wider engineering organisation. We are passionate about professional growth and developing our team culture, capability & capacity to meet customer needs whilst enabling every engineer to reach their potential through continuous learning. If this sounds like an environment in which you would thrive, then this could be the next role for you. Responsible for departmental operations planning/execution or is focused on execution of professional activities within a technical discipline. Functions with some autonomy but guided by established policies or review of end results.
The job allows modification of procedures and practices covering work as long as the end results meet standards of acceptability (quality, volume, timeliness etc.).

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS

Previous experience in an aviation, automotive or similar embedded systems development environment is helpful as it demonstrates understanding of working to rigorous industry mandated development standards; for example, ARP4754A. This shows a knowledge of working with complex system designs, for implementation in hardware and software.
An appropriate degree or HND in Engineering, Mathematics, Applied Physics or similar subject, or equivalent experience shows a logical mindset, alongside good problem solving and solution building skills.
Experience of the systems design lifecycle will help you in activities such as capturing, understanding and documenting the customer’s system and testing requirements. Strong understanding of what makes a good requirement and how this impacts validation. Good appreciation of baseline management is essential. Knowledge of different verification strategies and test equipment will aid in creating, updating and performing systems tests – be it script-based automated tests, or writing procedures for manual actions. Knowledge of test infrastructure and design of testing facilities is key to success in this role.
Deep enough experience will allow you to contribute to modifying power distribution systems architectures in co-operation with technical leads and with aircraft manufacturers based on feedback received from the test facility you will help define.

Responsibilities:

THE ROLE/ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

As a Systems Engineer in the Power Systems and Software Department, you would be helping manage the nascent requirements and interfaces, creating initial design baselines to feed the software, hardware and test teams. There must be effective management of changes coming from the customer, including supporting project technical leadership. You would be joining a dynamic environment that enables every engineer to reach their potential as the team switches from design definition to design verification and to final delivery.
This provides the prospects to broaden your skills by taking active responsibilities on the Verification and Integration phases. The main focus of the current project is on the development of a Lab environment suitable for troubleshooting and testing a business jet electrical power distribution system. The Department actively encourages cross-functional skills. You will use your Systems Engineering knowledge to help de-bug software via systems test results analysis, design in modifications into the systems lab environment and perform hands-on testing to expand on your knowledge of test equipment and processes for working safely in high power environments.
By joining GE Aviation at Cheltenham, ultimately, as part of a healthy Power department, you will have the opportunity to move projects and roles to provide variety and grow your responsibility as your experience increases.
