JOB SUMMARY:

The Advisor, Settlement and Immigration plays a key role in the department’s international student recruitment and retention efforts and works to support and champion international students and their success.
This position provides expertise and leadership to develop, deliver, and evaluate international student transition and support programs and initiatives designed for the successful orientation, transition, settlement, and integration into UFV campus life, studying and living in Canada.
As a certified Regulated International Student Advisor, the incumbent is responsible for advising international students on Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) policies related to their status studying and working in Canada.
The Advisor, develops partnerships with community settlement agencies and government agencies, strengthens connections, and builds new relationships to enhance the settlement experience of students.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Minimum three (3) years related work experience in the international education field (e.g. international student advising and/or service operations – admissions and recruitment preferred) at the public post-secondary level.
  • Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA) or Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) accredited training.
  • Maintains status of ‘Member in Good Standing’ of the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of BC secondary and post-secondary system, programs, and admission procedures.
  • Knowledge of Education Systems in primary international student markets an asset.
  • Expertise in IRCC relevant policies and regulations and ability to maintain required currency.
  • Confident communicator and presenter; excellent writing, editing, proofreading and facilitation, and intercultural communication skills.
  • Able to work effectively across of the institution and internationally exercising initiative, good judgment, tact, discretion, and diplomacy.
  • A professional client-services orientation with excellent interpersonal, written, oral and intercultural communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; able to prioritize numerous tasks, under tight timelines maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Experience in building internal and external partnership (e.g., settlement agencies, government agencies).
  • Good understanding of different social/cultural systems outside of Canada.
  • Able to analyze and problem-solve by exercising initiative, judgment, tact, and discretion.
  • Effective presentation skills and demonstrated ability to teach new and complex concepts to large and small groups.
  • Understanding of Canadian privacy/confidentiality laws and policies that govern UFV.
  • Proficient in MS Office: PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook. Experience with relational databases (e.g., Banner); data analysis, and reporting.
  • Experience with web content-editing software and web-based communication media.
  • Possess an understanding of, and commitment to international students and international education.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule including adjustment to daily and weekly schedules to accommodate required local and international travel.
  • Competence in a language(s) other than English related to UFV’s international recruitment strategy is an asset.
