ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
The African Nova Scotian (ANS)/Black Patient Navigator is a resource for African Nova Scotians and Black clients seeking culturally safe client care within the Nova Scotia Early Psychosis Program. The Navigator helps build relationships with the African Nova Scotian and Black community health programs, NSH/IWK health, provincial health system partners, and services and community sites/clinics within the zone. They provide regular feedback and advice to NSEPP, Early Psychosis Intervention Nova Scotia (EPINS), and other Mental Health & Addictions (MHA) service providers within NSH to improve access to appropriate care.
The Navigator also supports and advocates for ANS and Black clients and their families by facilitating cultural/spiritual needs and networking with community partners that provide services to ANS and Black people. Their focus is to overcome barriers to timely and culturally safe care and enhance the delivery of high-quality, culturally safe, trauma-informed, and person-centered care. Additionally, the Navigator coordinates client referrals to and from appropriate health programs and services. They also provide consultative and advisory services to ANS and Black patients referred to NSEPP/EPINS programs and services, offering cultural interpretation and health literacy translation services to support competent and safe practice. The ANSBPN supports ANS and Black patients in communications with physicians, nurses, and other frontline care staff.
