We are looking for a talented Air Bearing Lab Test Engineer . The air bearing lab test engineer is in charge of developing, building, commissioning, and maintaining component inspection and component test equipment and methodologies. The air bearing lab test engineer participates in acceptance, performance characterization, validation and qualification testing of the bearing system from the conception to the industrialization phases (air or gas lubricated rotating machines). They also support, execute, and coordinate testing activities related to the air bearing system validation per customer specifications, as part of a larger team, contributing to the successful launch of oil-less electrical rotating machines.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering
- 1 - 3 years of bearing system testing
- Must be familiar with instrumentation (industry standard sensor technology and signal conditioning including speed, force, pressure, temperature, flow, vibration)
- Must be familiar with controls (industry standard control components such as solenoids, valves, pressure regulators, flow regulators, I2Ps…)
- Must have experience with DAQ and LabVIEW programming and Matlab/ Python scripting
- Must have experience with CAD (2D and 3D), GD&T, Stackup
- Must have a strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical assemblies
- Knowledge of rotor dynamics, air foil bearing design and principles, materials and manufacturing methods is beneficial
- Strong communication skills

Responsibilities:
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Understand product development engineering and industrialization team needs to develop, design, source, build, commission, and maintain new inspection and test equipment and procedures including data acquisition.
- User Interface programming (LabVIEW) must include test automation for unattended runs.
- Data acquisition system (DAQ) specification, calibration, and setup is required including speed sensors, load cells, displacement sensors, thermocouples, thermistors, RTDs, pressure transducers (standard and piezoelectric sensors), flowmeters (orifice plate, turbine meter, vortex shedding), accelerometers and other.
- Test and inspection of equipment development includes specification, design, vendor selection, and procurement.
- Understand functional, characterization, and validation test requirements from product development engineering and industrialization teams and convert them into programmable automated test sequences.
- Assist in developing and managing test campaigns. Tests typically include performance characterization of air bearing systems and may include thermal, electrical, and mechanical testing.
- Postprocess and automate test data postprocessing and communicate results.
- Develop new and progress existing postprocessing methods using Matlab and/or Python.
- Document new and existing test, setup, calibration, and maintenance procedures and train team members to use complex test equipment for precise and accurate component and product characterization and validation.
- Demonstrate strong ownership and accountability for autonomously maintaining and continuously improving both the equipment, procedures, and methodologies.
- Apply Six Sigma tools to develop and monitor commissioned equipment and process condition. Identify and debug any questionable responses by utilizing FMEA and RCA principles and implement control plans.
- Act as a role model in adopting and enforcing HSE guidelines and 5S.
- Remain aware of trends in test infrastructure needs for the team and wider company and conceive and execute new projects to address them.
- Participate in collaboration with external companies and universities to maintain relationship with top players in the field of expertise (universities, labs, suppliers,…) in order to anticipate trends, stay on top of industry best practices and define the best strategy for tools development.
The salary range for this role is between $87,400 and $117,000.
- Note that this range represents the pay range for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. Starting rate of pay may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, position offered, education, training, and/or experience
