DESCRIPTION
The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, in partnership with Alberta Health Services, invites applications for an Academic Clinician Scientist in Transplant/Diabetes to be based at the University of Alberta Hospital. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions. Transplantation has a long-history at the University of Alberta and there is a dedicated Transplant service providing in-patient and outpatient consultation and longitudinal care (pre-, peri-, and post-transplant). The focus is on organ transplantation and the clinical transplant programs perform between 250-300 transplant procedures per year in adults and children for kidney, heart, liver, lung. Pancreas/islet, and intestinal/multivisceral transplantation. The University is currently home to more than 38,000 students with more than 15,000 faculty and staff.
The successful candidate will join a group of 13 endocrinologists in a tertiary care facility, with an additional 12 community endocrinologists in the Edmonton Zone, which serves over 1.5 million people, including the world’s largest pancreatic islet transplant program. The Division has excellent clinical facilities, a Royal College approved resident training program, and easy access to dynamic testing and the full range of diagnostic and therapeutic services.
The Endocrine Division’s research collaborations span basic, clinical and community-based research. Current areas of strength include Diabetes, Obesity and Nutrition, Quality Improvement, and Cardiovascular Disease and Exercise Physiology. Many of these collaborations are established through the Alberta Diabetes Institute, which houses dry and wet labs as well as an 8000 square feet clinical research unit (BodPod, DEXA, Whole Body Calorimeter) and a 1500 square foot exercise lab. The ADI provides a number of core services and administers a range of funding opportunities (pilot grants, studentships, post-doc fellowships).
Individuals interested in the education of trainees and a strong interest in research are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will have an MD with certification in General Internal Medicine or Endocrinology with the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent), and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).The successful candidate will have a focus on research, with additional training that shows a well developed research program with either a proven track record of success, or where this success is deemed highly likely. The successful candidate will have an MD and clinical training/expertise in the field of Transplant Medicine, specifically of Islet/Pancreas as well as experience in Ambulatory care of type 1, and Type 2 diabetes, Insulin pumps and their comorbidities.
Key accountabilities of the Academic Clinician Scientist in Transplant/Diabetes will include, but will not be limited to clinical management of patients with Diabetes Type 1 and 2, as well as contribute to the clinical service of Islet cell/solid organ transplant patients (minimum 25% effort). This position is intended to have a focus on research (at least 50% effort) related to transplant medicine/Islet/Diabetes. In addition, there will be an equitable expectation of teaching within the Division of endocrinology as well as contributions to education in the clinical Transplant Program/ATI, including medical students, residents, and fellows as well as to deliver CME to allied healthcare workers in Islet Transplant and Diabetes (up to 25% effort). There will be on-call and inpatient service requirements related to Transplant medicine (5-6 weeks annually). There is not a requirement for Endocrine on-call or triage services.
The successful candidate will be offered a contingent tenured or tenure-track appointment in the Department of Medicine, with the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor, which is in accordance with the University of Alberta Faculty Agreement, and offers a comprehensive benefits package.
Remuneration for this position is based on the Academic medicine & Health Services Program (AMHSP). Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
