JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Anaesthetic Nurse
Reporting to: Divisional Manager Theatre and Ward CRGH UK

SUMMARY:

  • To act at all times in accordance with the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority (HFEA) Code of Practice and the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Conduct.
  • To promote and maintain a high standard of patient care at all times. Ensure patients are compassionately and effectively cared for.
  • Maintain patients confidentiality, privacy, and dignity at all times.
  • Respects patients equality and diversity without prejudice or judgement and comply with CRGH policy.
  • To communicate effectively with all members of the Unit and promote teamwork.
  • Establish and provide good relationships with patients and their relatives.
  • Establish and provide good relationships with staff.
  • Respect all confidential information received, in accordance with HFEA guidelines.
  • Reporting condition or concern regarding patient(s) to medical staff and ensure that received instructions are carried out promptly and satisfactorily.
  • Ensure that patients are protected from unnecessary physical and mental disturbance hence ensuring his/her safety and well-being at all times.
  • To understand the need for and keep accurate documentation in all aspects of patient care.
  • Increase knowledge of fertility treatment to assist patients in their understanding of this complex treatment.RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • To be an integral part of the surgical process, working in the operating theatre assisting doctors and accompanying patients.
  • Ensuring that the operating theatre has been sterilised and preparing the necessary equipment for the operation.
  • Assisting the surgeon and anaesthetist throughout the surgery with various tasks.
  • Act appropriately in emergencies or stressful situations.
  • To update regularly on cardiac arrest, fire procedures and mandatory training.
  • To present in full uniform and with smart appearance at all times when on duty.
  • To have and implement a full knowledge and practical skills in relation to infection control.
  • Understand the concept of whistleblowing and report any concerns to line manager.
  • Understand the concept of safeguarding and report any concerns to line manager.
  • Arrive at work on time as per allocated shift on the rota and report to line manager by phone call any absence at least one hour before shift.
  • Attend in house training.
  • Effective time management to avoid patient delays and efficiency in service.
  • Ensure registration and revalidation with the Nursing and Midwifery Council is updated and registration active continuously. It is the responsibility of the registered nurse to ensure registration is confirmed on revalidation and can provide evidence to their employer.
  • To work according to the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Professional Conduct or relevant professional guidelines and for a defined group of patients and take responsibility for:
  • The assessment of care and health education needs;
  • The development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care including the criteria for the transferral of each patient from the recovery areas.
  • To be the designated practitioner to look after patient pre and second stage post-anaesthesia in the recovery/ward area.
  • To develop leadership skills and experience in the management of the recovery room/ward area.
  • To promote and participate in the implementation of the Nursing & Midwifery strategy:
  • Reviewing nursing practice and implementing appropriate changes based on research/best practice;
  • To promote and maintain effective communication.
  • To admit, recover patients on second stage post-anaesthesia and discharge patients home as appropriate.
  • To participate in the delivery of patients care in recovery room/ward area, treatment room, Embryo Transfer/Intrauterine Insemination room as appropriate.
  • The role will include preparing medicine, performing medicine and equipment checks, stock management, checking patients are safely prepared for theatre, admissions and patient transfers to recovery.

Responsibilities:

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND EDUCATION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To develop own teaching skills and participate in staff/student education programmes.
  • To help maintain a suitable learning environment for staff and act as a facilitator/mentor/preceptor in the supervision and teaching of less experienced staff.
  • To attend the CRGH orientation programmes and mandatory training sessions.
  • To be responsible for developing and sustaining own knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness and maintain a professional portfolio.
  • To be appraised at least annually and contribute to personal performance/development plan.
  • To participate in a programme of clinical supervision as appropriate.
  • To assist in the development and implementation of theatre practice guidelines, standards and policies.

AUDIT, QUALITY AND RISK MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To maintain awareness of national, professional, and local quality issues relevant to delivery of patient care.
  • To uphold quality initiatives that improves customer care and enhance the interface between staff, patients, and visitors.
  • To lead/assist in the audit process for monitoring and reviewing nursing quality in recovery/ward area.
  • To identify potential risks for all personnel, patients, and visitors, taking appropriate action/advice.
  • To promote the role of recovery practitioner in handling complaints in accordance with local policy.
  • To maintain a clean and safe environment in the recovery/ward area and to assist in the preparation of regulatory audits such as the CQC and HFEA.
  • To be aware of and adhere to:
  • The CRGH policies and procedures;
  • Section 7 & 8 of the Health and Safety at Work Act;
  • Data Protection Act 2018;
  • Other relevant legislation and agreed practiced/policy.
