In Short
The Application Support Engineer is responsible for supporting, monitoring, maintaining, and operating middle and back-office production applications at SM&T. This role entails delivering ongoing application release cycle changes, onboarding new applications, and providing high-quality operational and technical support to internal business functions. The successful candidate will possess experience in providing application support in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate proactive support capabilities.
What You Will Do
As the Application Support Engineer, you will be responsible for overseeing incident and service request fulfilment across our middle and back-office application portfolio. This includes collaborating with business stakeholders to clarify requirements and ensuring timely resolution of issues. You’ll lead problem management processes, identifying underlying issues, providing short-term workarounds, and coordinating with development teams for long-term fixes.

In this position, you will play a crucial role in managing major production incidents, taking ownership until closure, providing regular updates to stakeholders, and minimising downtime and disruption. You will also be responsible for deploying application code on production and pre-production environments, managing business communications, and ensuring post-release environment availability.

  • Review and approve change requests requiring application support oversight.
  • Proactively identify opportunities for application improvements in performance, availability, and automation of repetitive tasks.
  • Conduct daily morning and evening checks for critical applications, providing status reports to the IT Operations Team.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with both business and IT communities.

What You Will Bring
We are seeking a candidate with several years’ experience as an application support Engineer with experience in Energy Trading and Risk Management (ETRM) systems, demonstrating a strong understanding of the complexities and challenges within this specialised area. The ideal candidate will have a strong customer service orientation, with exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills that enable effective collaboration with clients and team members alike.

This individual will have a strong understanding of the trade lifecycle and proficiency in SQL, including the ability to write and execute SQL queries. Familiarity with the Windows platform is essential for this role, ensuring you can effectively manage and troubleshoot within this environment.

  • Capacity to work autonomously and manage multiple high-priority tasks simultaneously.
  • Leadership and team management skills.
  • Technical proficiency in MS Windows Server and MS SQL, along with web technologies.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Experience in maintaining positive working relationships with internal departments, as well as third-party vendors and hosting providers.
