Description:
This position functions as an applied research engineer for the Nuclear Reactor Laboratory (NRL) and supports nuclear engineering research that utilizes the resources of the NRL, including the research reactor, gamma irradiators, beam facilities, neutron depth profiling chamber, glovebox, gamma ray spectroscopy system, and other radiation sources and measurement devices; works with industry, national laboratory, and university experimenters to develop, model, prototype, fabricate, and test experiment irradiations rigs to meet their irradiation needs; obtains and maintains a license for operating the research reactor and participates in necessary support functions; performs necessary surveillances and maintenance for reactor mechanical and electronic systems; oversees operation and safety of a small machine shop, a fume hood, and a glovebox; monitors experimenters and ensures safe usage of laboratory equipment; assists with funding proposals for reactor facility upgrades and supports the implementation of upgrades; engages in educational outreach in the form of tours and demonstrations for appropriate academic groups;
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Minimum Education:Required:
Bachelor’s Level Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience with a major in nuclear engineering, engineering, physics, or other related field.
DESIRED EDUCATION:
Nuclear Engineering Major or Minor or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience:Required:
2 years of relevant experience in nuclear engineering, engineering research, or another related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; ability to obtain a Reactor Operator’s License from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission within 12 months of the start of employment; ability to become an approved user of the Co-60 and Cs-137 irradiators within 3 months of employment; must be able to climb a ladder and manuever up to 30 pounds for short durations (i.e. shipping, receiving, and loading experiment rigs); successful completion of a fingerprint-based background check in accordance with the Office of Radiation Safety within the first 30 days of employment; ability to translate, adapt and apply academic and/or practical knowledge to the conduct of nuclear research and services; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously; strong written and verbal communication skills;
