Description:

Technical Operations, Resources and Services at Sheffield Hallam University provides high quality technical support to teaching and practical activities within the University. Within TORS the Engineering, Electronics and Construction Workshop teams are committed to providing a highly skilled technical service to all workshop activities in areas such as Precision Engineering, Construction, Automation, Metrology, Materials testing, Physics and Computing and Electronics.
The team’s main duties include preparation of workshops and labs, equipment and materials for under- and post-graduate practical classes, troubleshooting practical issues as they arise, demonstrating instrumentation and techniques, construction and manufacture of items for a range of stakeholders, supporting and adhering to health and safety requirements, developing practical sessions in collaboration with academic colleagues, providing cross-team support to enable self-directed study and maintenance of the site’s infrastructure and logistical arrangements. Other duties include equipment maintenance, workshop housekeeping, ordering and stocking of reagents/consumables, waste disposal and supporting management of documents and operational systems.
You will be directly involved in supporting the delivery of workshop and lab-based activities. Work will be carried out in the specialist facilities in Sheaf and Harmer buildings and could also involve some work in the Institute of Art and Design in the Head Post Office building.
You should be highly motivated with a professional work ethic and the ability to work independently and as part of a team; you will be confident and meticulous your work and able to work to tight deadlines to ensure customer focussed results.
This is a full time, level 3 apprenticeship that is for 3 years (depending on previously obtained qualifications) starting w/c 9th September 2024. The successful candidate will attend Sheffield College 1 day per week to study the level 3 (BTEC) in Engineering in line with the Level 3 Engineering standard (Job title 13). You must be able to make your own way to Sheffield college.
